The MP Materials Magnetics team is seeking a hands-on Engineer to join the Product & Process

Engineering group to support development of the technology and commercial-scale manufacturing

footprint required to convert NdPr oxide into high-performance permanent magnets for cutting-edge

applications. This position will have responsibility for executing on key projects across a broad range of

initiatives, including work on topics ranging from design of materials for optimum performance, to

development and execution of materials characterization methods, to manufacturing process

optimization, to closed loop recycling approaches, and more. This is a rare opportunity to play a key role in

returning an essential manufacturing capability to the USA.

The Engineer will specialize in developing tools to understand magnet physics, and should have a strong

solid-state physics background including experience in both experimental and computational methods.

Computational methods used are anticipated to include programming, data analysis, statistical methods,

and possibly machine learning. The candidate will be expected to leverage these methods to provide

physics-based answers to critical product performance questions involving the design, manufacture, and

application of Neodymium-based permanent magnets. This position requires a combination of strong

technical skills and a practical nature to understand current magnet materials design and manufacturing

methods and processes.

This position will initially be located in Las Vegas, NV, with a mix of remote and on-site work at MP’s

facilities in Las Vegas, NV and Mountain Pass, CA. The Engineer will be expected to help coordinate the

Magnetics team’s work with MP’s upstream rare earth element processing activities. Project-related travel

of up to 50% is also anticipated, including regular visits to Fort Worth, TX, other domestic travel, and the

potential for some limited international travel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Lead and support the development of physics-based models of both manufacturing processes and

magnetic properties for MP Materials products

  • Design and conduct hands-on experiments to evaluate and improve the performance of magnet

materials and manufacturing methods

  • Engage with university researchers, strategic partners, and government laboratories involved in

NdFeB magnet property research to bring value and knowledge to MP Materials

  • Support the Magnetics team by executing flexible assignments which may include collaboration

with the MP Materials mine, running characterization equipment at various locations, or other

hands-on work

  • Document all projects, provide written guidance for model usage, and build team knowledge of

current and future magnet research

  • Provide visibility for MP Materials within the permanent magnet community by publishing in

technical and trade journals and presenting at conferences

  • Other duties as assigned

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or Masters in Physics, Materials Science, or related field
  • Familiarity with material property modeling
  • Agile researcher, adept at identifying untested questions about materials and the interactions

between processing, structure, and performance

  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Experience with Project Management and a hands-on approach to projects

DESIRED QUALITIES:

  • Prior experience with magnetic properties of materials
  • Proactive learning about rare earth magnet manufacturing
  • Experience with programming, data analysis, statistical methods, machine learning
  • Familiarity with Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME)
  • Ability to identify and solve problems, and effectively communicate and advocate for these

solutions to others (from operators to management)

  • Lifelong learner able and enthusiastic to apply existing skills and experiences to new problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Expert level user of Microsoft Office suite
