We are currently looking for a Log Yard Manager. In this role, you'll be managing all functions of the log yard, which includes, but is not limited to, maintaining an organized flow of material through the log yard, facilitating the raw material needs of production, and providing training for and displaying positive leadership to our log yard personnel.
While we review all applications that come in, this position requires an extensive knowledge of the forestry industry, including a detailed understanding of the characteristics of log species, markets for different grades and types of logs, and a strong ability to manage people. A well-established network within the industry is also preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities*
- Maintain a working knowledge of all yard equipment such as tractors, clam, chain saws, grading stations, etc.
- Effectively train yard personnel in the safe use of all tools and equipment.
- Become and remain familiar with all log applications to assure logs are properly stored and utilized in the application which best suits the species, grade, diameter and length.
- Be capable of identifying log species and application designation from the tractor to assure proper decking.
- Oversee yard activities to assure a smooth flow of material through the yard. This includes, but is not limited to, logs, firewood, chips, sawdust and other bi-products.
- Coordinate with production managers to provide log buyer training exercises to help give the buyers a better understanding of raw material needs with regard to grade/price.
- Regularly communicate with the Green End Production Manager/Supervisor on vat status
- Establish a daily work priority list for loader operators and re-grade personnel to help streamline daily activities and maximize workflow efficiency.
- Perform log audits with log buyers as directed by the company president.
- Regularly communicate with log buyers on quality issues (ie. check scaling).
- Collect log inventory data.
- Schedule and perform log sales.
- As weather conditions dictate, assure all incoming logs are properly waxed and stored in order to minimize spoilage.
- Order all supplies required for proper functioning of the yard while working within a limited budget
- When weather dictates, ensure driveway, parking areas and outside work areas are properly plowed, scraped and salted.
- Remain flexible with regard to work schedule. Hours of need will fluctuate depending upon yard activity.
- Schedule all maintenance of equipment so as not to interrupt production.
- Back up Administrative Support in entering tags, building runs, etc within Company’s ERP system (currently Netsuite)
- Other duties and projects as determined by production and overall company business needs
Coaching Responsibilities
- Provide positive leadership by demonstrating proper examples of enthusiasm, being safety-minded, focused on quality conscientiousness, and having a strong, productive work ethic.
- Train staff on safe, correct, and productive job performance skills and habits.
- Provide corrective instructions or actions as warranted or instructed.
- Complete the following personnel related documentation as instructed:
- Performance and Corrective Action Reviews
- Reports of injury
- Personnel Record Changes
- Time Recording
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or related field
- Minimum 5 years of in-field experience
- Can lead a team with positivity and enthusiasm
- Strong and broad business acumen
- Strong interpersonal relationship skills
- Exceptional documentation and tracking skills
- Proficient in computer skills working within Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and ERP Systems (Netsuite preferred)
- LEAN manufacturing background preferred
