Job description
This part-time, 20-hours per week position assists GRPL's Information Systems department in a variety of processes related to tech support and network administration functions. The position has a strong emphasis on internal customer service, and may assist in public service areas.
Examples of work:
Collaborates on processes related to providing hardware and software support via email, phone, and/or in person.- Maintains, installs, and replaces hardware and software systems and components.
- Assists the IS team with network systems operation and troubleshooting.
- Assists with A/V and tech support related to facility use by staff and the public.
- Writes supplementary code and programs for network applications.
- Researches and/or downloads updated drivers; researches and provides input on issues related to troubleshooting; assists with the evaluation of hardware and software components for purchasing.
- Maintains a tracking system for invoices and components.
- May travel to different branches and work in different locations in the course of a shift.
- May perform other duties of a similar nature as assigned.
There is flexibility for scheduling within regular library operating hours, however applicants should be able to work:
- At least 4 days per week in 5-hour shifts
- 2 evenings per week (Main Library is open until 9:00 pm Monday - Thursday and until 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday)
- Every other Saturday
- High school diploma or a GED is required; a college degree is preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of Linux and Microsoft Windows is required; knowledge of Perl is preferred.
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and vehicle insurance required.
- 2 years of college in computer science or related field is preferred.
- 2 years experience in tech support or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.
- Ability to provide professional, friendly service to library staff and patrons; ability to make independent, reliable decisions related to tech support and customer service functions.
- Knowledge and ability to install system hardware, software, and related equipment; knowledge and ability to effectively provide hardware and software support related to Windows, Linux, and Apple operating systems; knowledge of Perl; understanding of TCP/IP and network functions.
- Ability to learn and effectively support A/V and tech issues related to facility use.
- Ability to perform standardized processes consistently; ability to follow procedures in processing forms and other communication.
- Understanding of general office procedures, processes and equipment; ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including computer workstations, typical electronic devices, and software.
- Ability to communicate professionally with diverse groups both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other staff and the general public; ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to work without close supervision.
- Ability to understand systems and maintain an organized and effective work process; flexibility to adapt to changes as processes are updated.
- Ability to work with supervisor and process feedback regarding job performance.
- Ability to travel efficiently between branches during a shift; possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and vehicle insurance.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time in the performance of the duties associated with this position; ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance is also required; visual acuity and ability to access, input, and retrieve information from electronic devices is essential to this position.
