The Weld County Department of Human Services Child Support Division is searching for a Legal Technician to actively work and monitor a child support caseload of 100 – 200 cases. Establish paternity, child support orders, medical support orders, and review and modify support orders.

The Ideal Candidate for the Department of Human Services, Child Support Division will be someone who possesses the following traits:

$27.37 - $ 34.62 per hour plus benefits (see benefits tab on the job posting).

This range encompasses the nine pay steps available should you receive the position and demonstrate satisfactory performance over time.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Conduct initial systems search for locate data on parents. Locate absent parent's address, employment, and income and resource information utilizing numerous automated and manual tools.

Assess case information to determine appropriate administrative and legal course of action. Obtain financial information on parties from a variety of resources. Analyze financial data for the purpose of determining appropriate income and expenses used to calculate child support. Accurately apply child support guidelines.

Prepare and file administrative and legal actions within mandated time frames. Review court actions with attorney and assist at court hearings. May be required to testify at hearings as to how child support guidelines were calculated.

Communicate with parents, attorneys, court, employers and the general public in a professional manner designed to encourage participation in the overall goals of the department.

Analyze and work system generated reports, on-line alerts, calendar reviews, CSE Tools, and automated locate responses. Update child support automated system on all contacts and actions taken in a clear and concise manner.

Prioritize and organize tasks to maximize efficiency and productivity. Actively work and monitor a child support caseload. Establish paternity, child support orders, medical support orders, and review and modify support orders. Problem solve with other agency personnel.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • Successful completion of an Associate's Degree is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Required Work Experience:

  • Four years full time business or clerical experience in an office environment which includes extensive customer service, telephone use and computer experience.
  • Two years' work experience which MUST include legal secretarial or paralegal experience.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • Experience in legal document preparation in a family law setting.
  • Experience with County or State Child Support Services programs.

Preferred Certification:

  • Paralegal Certificate

Condition of Employment

  • Must obtain Paralegal Certificate within first 12 months of employment if not certified upon hire.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must type 35 words per minute.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License and adequate Liability Insurance. Must provide own transportation and be willing to travel throughout Weld County.
  • Must pass Human Services and COVIS Background Checks. Background checks also include CBI/FBI fingerprinting and will continue to be monitored throughout employment.
Other Necessary Requirements

Ability to accurately enter data into several different computer programs. Ability to learn and apply new computer skills on a regular basis. Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Windows and Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and department policies and procedures. Ability to write professional correspondence using appropriate grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization both telephonically and in person.

Ability to apply math concepts and calculations in the work environment.

Ability to apply common sense and critical thinking to problem solve in a work environment.

Ability to adapt to fast paced, high volume, and ever changing work environment.

Ability to handle high stress situations with courtesy and professionalism.

Ability to organize and prioritize competing tasks in order to maximize efficiency and productivity.

Adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines and appropriate release of information.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time and is occasionally required to stand and walk. Occasionally the employee may be required to lift and/or move heavy files or objects up to 25 pounds. The employee frequently is required to use their hands and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus such as that used when using a computer or reading.
