Job description
SideQuest is the largest standalone virtual reality content platform in the world and we are excitedly working towards becoming the world's most connected community for innovation and creativity in the space.
We offer people an open and trusted place to connect, build and discover XR experiences; without barriers.
In its simplest terms, we go above and beyond to help VR/AR game and app developers release, launch, promote and share their creations with the world.
As a UI Designer at SideQuest, you will take our conceptual ideas, insights and research and rapidly turn this into top-level visual mockups.
You are someone who is passionate about and has a real flair for visual design. You’ll love illustrating ideas and will be looking for an opportunity to have some creative license.
Your goal will be to take charge of rapidly mocking up high fidelity UIs in response to design briefs and working closely with product, design and stakeholders across the business to pitch your ideas and gather feedback.
We’re looking for a particular art style that hits all the right notes with gamers. Our brand and identity leans into a certain kind of vibe; think blade runner, cyberpunk, neon, futuristic, dark mode! If this sounds like your style and you have the portfolio to prove it, get in touch, we’d be keen to talk to you!
We’re especially keen to talk to candidates with gaming or related industry experience. If you can work in the browser and XR even better. If you have experience working up killer UI to make an online store or marketplace really pop then get in touch. Being a startup, we’re keen to hear from designers who can be flexible where the need arises, willing and able to help out across the design (UX/UI) lifecycle. This might include wireframing, prototyping, user testing and working with component libraries.
Finally you will be a strong communicator, collaborator and team player. You’ll be self-managing and adept at maintaining momentum, connections and productivity in a fully remote company. You’ll be great at building trusted relationships, listening to and responding to stakeholder feedback. And you’ll be delivery focused, able to accurately estimate work and reliably deliver on that commitment.
You’ll be reporting into:
Matt Coulson - Chief Product Officer
And working alongside:
Nick Small - Senior UX Designer
Kris Telford - Graphic Designer
John McKerchar - Junior UX Designer
Ceelie Fox - User Researcher
In your first 6-12 months you'll:
- Develop top level mock-ups for stakeholder presentations
- Presenting UI design concepts, imagery and artwork internally
- Create graphics and do research to remain up to date with styles and trends
- Maintain and manage the component system
- Continuously collecting feedback to iterate and improve upon designs
- Work collaboratively across the design team to deliver high quality assets on time
What you'll bring:
- 4-6 years of hands on UI experience
- Experience managing people
- An enthusiasm and strong track record for being able to rapidly mock-up cool concepts in response to a design brief
- Standout design in gaming or related space
- Experience working with a component library
- An eye and knack for visual design
- Solid understanding of high fidelity design
- Proficiency with modern design tools like Figma & Creative Cloud
- Ability work well within a team but also able to thrive with autonomy
- Experience of and/or enthusiasm and excitement to work at a start-up
Bonus points if:
- AR/VR experience
- Gaming industry experience
- Portfolio of work with gaming industry aesthetics
- Experience working as an agency or freelance UI Designer
- Passionate about the bigger picture
A Few Things We Believe
Although we are a start-up, we don't believe in burning out for the sake of a mission. There will always be a few late nights, or long weeks, but from the early stages, we've put the mental health and wellbeing of our Questers before anything else, which is why we offer our Questers:
- A 4-day work week with flexible working times supported by a generous annual leave policy
- The guarantee of working for a globally remote company
- Generous health benefits
- Free access to online learning platform(s) with time to develop your skills
-A Skunkworks Policy - You can work on a side project as long as it somewhat relates to your role
Beyond that, by working with technology as innovative and transformative as virtual and augmented reality, the importance of having diverse teams and opinions is only heightened and highlighted when recognizing that everything we build and promote has the amazing opportunity to offer new ways of being inclusive and accessible than ever before.
We welcome applications from everyone regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. Should you need any accommodations or adjustments throughout the interview process and beyond, please let us know.
