      Job Summary:

        The Lactation Educator provides focuses on developing, organizing, and conducting an inpatient and outpatient lactation service in collaboration with other members of the health care team. The Lactation Educator independently plans, implements, and evaluates the new mother’s status and infant’s response to breastfeeding. Incumbent assumes teaching, consultation and leadership responsibilities, with participation in committee and quality improvement activities. This position also serves as a liaison with community organizations and represents NCH at the Collier County Breast Feeding Coalition. The Lactation educator promotes lactation practices and maintains fiscal responsibility for the Lactation Center, which may include some supply sales.



      Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
        • Acts as a resource and consultant educator to nursing, patients, medical staff and community on lactation issues
        • Directs and involves staff in research activities and/or applies results to clinical Develops/uses clinical pathways as appropriate.
        • Active participation in the performance improvement process, with problem identification, assessment, implementation and evaluation methods utilized.
        • Is able to perform a thorough chart audit in response to continuous improvement activities.
        • Obtains an appropriate breastfeeding history for the mother and child. Performs a comprehensive breastfeeding assessment of the mother-child dad.
        • Assesses barriers to learning, finds solutions to challenging situations.
        • Identifies standards of care common to patient population.
        • Evaluates all assessment data to develop a plan of care that is bother appropriate for specific problems and acceptable to the client.
        • Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team by collaborative systematic problem solving. Effectively coordinates breastfeeding care by providing written reports of consultation and making appropriate referrals to other health care providers and community service/support resources.
        • Attends patient care conferences.
        • Evaluates results of care using accepted outcome criteria; revise the plan accordingly, and consult and/or refer when needed. Addresses unresolved needs in discharge planning.
        • Timely and accurate documentation reflects hospital/unit standards.
        • Documents care timely and completely.
        • Provides feedback regarding problems and complaints, and offers constructive suggestions.
        • Prioritizes patient treatment to best meet patient needs.
        • Identify the need for and provide client teaching and anticipatory guidance appropriate to the client’s age, developmental status, abilities, culture, religion, ethnicity, and support system.
        • Answers client phone calls within 48 hours and completes assignments on time.
        • Proves all aspects of patient/client based on established standards. Demonstrates competency in all procedures within scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of patients served; the ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patient needs; a knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatment of these patients.
        • Uses breastfeeding equipment in an appropriate and fiscally prudent manner, including discussion of benefits and risks, assuring cleanliness and maintaining appropriate billing oversight.
        • Maintains and promotes the lactation center.
        • Maintains the IBCLC certification.
        • Adheres to these guidelines, the ILCA Standards of Practice for IBCLC Lactation Consultants and the IBCLC Ethics.
        • Coordinates breastfeeding support group.
        • Provides general patient care on the unit when critical staffing issues arise based on lactation
        • Actively assists and supports departmental activities to ensure that operational and salary expenses are equal to or less than approved budget.
        • Understands the principles and concepts of Performance Improvement. Looks for opportunities and solutions for process improvements and seeks to improve job skills.
        • Documents on every patient that the initial feeding plan was verified and if it includes formula that education occurred that focused on the benefits of exclusive breast feeding and the risks of adding

      Education, Experience, Qualifications:
        • BSN strongly preferred.
        • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
        • Must have at least 2+ years of acute care nursing experience.
        • Basic Life Support (BLS Provider) certification from the American Heart Association required.
        • NRP certification required within 90 days of hire and maintains.
        • Certification as a Lactation Consultant through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC) or certification as a CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) required at time of hire.
        • Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
