Job description
The Kitchen Support qualifications must meet or exceed state licensing requirements for age, education, and
experience as well as:
▪ Preferred at least three years of experience in food service
▪ Knowledge of local and state laws governing food service
▪ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
▪ Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills
▪ Friendly and approachable demeanor
▪ Maintain a professional appearance, attitude and work ethic always
▪ Good personal hygiene
▪ Knowledge of proper food preparation and kitchen safety
▪ Hold current pediatric first aid and cpr certification
Job Responsibilities and Tasks
▪ Maintains effective communication with families regarding their children’s food service needs.
▪ Prepares breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily in amounts based on number of children and staff present that day, allowing for second helpings for children, if needed.
▪ Portions and serves food in a manner that enables the classroom teachers to successfully implement Family
Style Meal Service.
▪ Meals are served in a timely manner to coincide with each classroom’s daily schedule and maintaining holding temperatures of food.
▪ Posts and follows approved menus. Posts approved, nutritionally sound substitutions, as needed.
▪ Post all food allergy and food restrictions alerts in kitchen with child’s name, classroom assignment, and detailed description of allergy or food restriction.
▪ Prepares approved substitutes or alternate foods for children, if necessary.
▪ Stocks shelves and refrigerators food safely and efficiently.
▪ Keeps accurate inventory records and places food orders in accordance with center budget
▪ Minimizes food waste while ensuring children are provided with minimum portions as well additional helpings of food if desired.
▪ Keeps kitchen floor, counters, shelves, and related work areas safe and clean.
▪ Maintains safe refrigeration and storage of food products.
▪ Must be able to determine food temperatures and ensure that food is served and stored at appropriate temperatures.
▪ Correctly cleans, washes, sanitizes and stores dishes and utensils.
▪ Maintains a clean, safe, healthy environment through scheduled cleaning and frequent visual checks.
▪ Participates in emergency drills in accordance with company and licensing requirements.
▪ Maintains kitchen equipment to ensure a safe environment that meets company and licensing safety standards.
▪ Understands and implements emergency procedures in case of emergency situations.
▪ Completes and maintains all required paperwork and record keeping in a time manner.
Physical & Mental Requirements
▪ Childcare demands physical fitness and mental acuity as staff care for children who cannot care for themselves. The Kitchen support must be able to react quickly with sound judgement and problem-solving skills in complex and critical situations.
▪ Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and holding children weighting up to 60 pounds, up to 100 times daily.
▪ Must be able to stand approximately 95% of the workday.
▪ Capable of safely handling knives and other shop objects need to prepare food.
▪ Able to stoop and bend to clean, store and retrieve food and utensils.
▪ Able to count, record information, and follow recipes and instructions.
