Job purpose


Wabanaki Public Health believes culture, language and prevention activities are key protective factors in reducing youth high risk behaviors. Youth are essential partners in creating positive change in their lives and communities. The Kcitpahsuwet Educator will facilitate community suicide prevention activities and trainings for youth, families, organizations and community members.


Duties and responsibilities


  • Coordinate suicide prevention activities and trainings for youth and families within Penobscot county’s tribal community
  • Assist with the design and delivery of trainings to youth
  • Research and create resource materials around suicide prevention, early intervention, postvention and recovery ready communities
  • Work as part of the WPHW team to plan and implement youth gatherings such as Project Venture, GONA and the WPHW Inter-Tribal Youth Gathering
  • Provide support for Project Venture within, after, and out of school activities
  • Contribute to WPHW’s website and social media initiatives, participate in outreach activities, assist with other programming as needed, and participate in WPHW planning and visioning
  • Maintain a fun and safe place for youth to develop a sense of pride, optimism, and belonging
  • Promote the development of social and emotional skills, youth empowerment and youth voice
  • Create an environment which frequently recognizes both the efforts and achievements of youth in meaningful public ways
  • Employ problem-solving skills when needed to redirect youth’s behaviors
  • Engage with all staff in a collaborative manner
  • Maintain communication with the supervisor with the use of email, call/text, Microsoft calendar, the one drive, and timesheets
  • Attend/present at WPH community events (health fairs, community events, DCC meetings, etc.)
  • Attend trainings and engage in professional development
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Ensure youth council/youth programs attendance and program data are tracked, collected, and analyzed
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications


Qualifications include:

  • University degree or college diploma in public health, health, education or a related field AND two (2) years previous experience OR
  • Six (6) years of experience in public health, health, education, youth-serving profession, or a related field
  • Experience working in Tribal Communities
  • Experience working with youth
  • Understanding of Social/Emotional Development
  • Open to new ways of thinking about youth programming and prevention
  • Event planning
  • A sense of humor
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills,
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently
  • A strong work ethic and enthusiasm
  • Candidate must be willing to travel with some overnights for trainings, youth retreats, and events.
  • A good driving record and access to reliable transportation are required.
  • All candidates must pass a criminal background check
