Job Summary:
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking a Janitor Heavy Duty who will be responsible for performing janitorial and custodial maintenance duties of ADJC buildings and grounds. Job Duties:
- Vacuum; washing walls; spot-cleaning and shampooing carpets; trash removal; bathroom/toilet cleansing; constructions project clean up and grounds cleaning
- Clean/polish hard surfaced floors to include operating/maintaining powered scrubbers, buffers, waxers, wet vacuums, and other custodial equipment
- Ordering and distributing janitorial supplies and maintaining records of materials used
- Responding to emergency spills/contamination situations; and follow all safety rules and regulations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge of:
- Principles, methods, and techniques used in caring for institutional and commercial buildings
- Principles, methods, and techniques used in operating powered cleaning equipment
- Principles and techniques of work leadership and scheduling activities of a custodial operation
- Principles and techniques of cleaning agents and chemical reactions when solutions are mixed
- Principles and techniques ensuring all safety, security, rules and regulations are complied with
- Reading, writing, and speaking the English language
Skill in:
- Effective use and maintenance of powered cleaning equipment
- Application of cleaning methods and techniques
- Analyzing a product use accurately and adopting effective course of action
- Storing of cleaning supplies
- Positioning self to avoid inquiry when lifting heavy objects
- Written and verbal communication
Ability to:
- To manage and quickly adapt to changing priorities
- To handle multiple tasks to meet goals and objectives
- To supervise youth workers
- To quickly learn new operating and safety instructions for equipment
- To make sound decisions mindful of existing resources
- To communicate pro-actively with employees, supervisors, and customers
- To learn and adhere to all agency policies and procedures
- To work in a correctional environment
- To follow written/verbal instructions and proper use of chemicals and equipment
Selective Preference(s):
- One (1) or more years of professional experience providing custodial or janitorial services. Experience with handling cleaning supplies is preferred.
- Bilingual skills in Spanish/English preferred but not required
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current valid Arizona-issued driver’s license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
The successful candidate is required to complete the following:

- Drug Screening
- Medical/Physical Examination
- Arizona residency is required for this position.

Retirement:
This position participates in the Corrections Officer Retirement Plan (CORP).
CORP Tier 3 is a Defined Contribution, 401 (a) retirement plan
- New members have the opportunity to define their contribution amount
- Employer contributes a dollar-for-dollar match equal to 5% of a member's salary
- Employees are fully vested after 3 years of service
