    Instructional Assistants for Magnet Schools

    GENERAL SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
    The instructional assistant assists the certified professional staff member in providing a well organized, smoothly functional class environment.

    RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION
    The instructional assistant is directly responsible to the professional staff members to whom assigned and under the general supervision of the school principal. Daily class related assignments made by the classroom teacher.

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Work with individuals and small groups of students to reinforce material introduced by the teacher, and foster skills while encouraging independence.
    • Accompany students when trips out of the classroom are necessary.
    • Establish supportive relationships with students while maintaining the role as an authority figure.
    • Serve as a major source of information and help to any substitute teacher.
    • Alert the teacher and/or administrator to any problem, special information or situations.
    • Assist with large and small group activities.
    • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and student confidentiality.
    • Aid the teacher in conducting lessons that require preparation of visual aids, operations of audio-visual equipment, and other equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
    • Assist the teacher in implementing behavior/social skills programs.
    • Remain student focused, maintaining a caring, and safe developmentally appropriate environment.
    • Assist the teacher by supporting the development and construction of new materials as needed.
    • Be punctual and consistent in meeting daily time schedules.
    • Be receptive to new ideas and suggestions.
    • Assist the teacher in conducting routine clerical duties.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of all transportation procedures, including early and late dismissals.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of all emergency procedures.
    • Be able to lift 40 pounds.
    • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

    Desirable Qualifications, Experience, and Training
    • Minimum of a high school diploma and a Child Development Associate Credential or passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment test as required by NCLB or an Associate's degree
    • Previous experience in programs working with children/students; Effective oral and written communication skills; bi-lingual
    • Genuine interest in serving the needs of students and the ability to operate within the philosophy of the school; Ability to maintain confidentiality.
