Duties

As an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE TECHNICIAN, GS-0640-09, you will plan, schedule, execute, manage and administer the State/territory/or district ARNG Industrial Hygiene Program. Ensure statutory and regulatory compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of the Army (DA), Department of Defense (DOD) and NGB regulations, standards and guidance. Serve as an advisor on State health matters, (e.g., health hazard identification, asbestos and lead abatement). Survey, inspect and evaluate operational and newly constructed facilities and various activities to identify, evaluate and reduce or eliminate potential health hazards. Determine appropriate survey methods and techniques. Sample using approved methods to determine nature and degree of hazards for a wide variety of materials and environments. Determine compliance with Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) or Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs). Make recommendations on control measures and changes in work procedures or schedules to ensure compliance with established health standards. Other duties as assigned.

Telework: ELIGIBLE FOR SITUATIONAL TELEWORK ONLY, INCLUDING EMERGENCY AND PRESCRIBED "UNSCHEDULED TELEWORK"
Work Schedule: This position works on a 5/4/9 compressed work schedule that consists of a 5 day workweek, then a 4 day workweek ( 8 nine-hour days and 1 eight-hour day and an SDO, Scheduled Day Off) to complete the 80 hour pay period. Work schedule is subject to change based on mission requirements.

  • The incumbent of this position description must have, at a minimum, a completed National Agency Check (NAC) prior to position assignment.
  • Irregular and overtime hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies.
  • Position is designated as Essential Personnel and may be subject to duty in preparation for a state emergency or disaster declaration. This designation will not exceed 14 calendar days unless approved by the TAG.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Must have a validated understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the occupational series and grade. Based on the type of experiences gained through related military technical medical training schools and/or completed medical courses from private or public accredited technical schools or colleges, may include these experiences to qualify for the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-07) or equivalent? Experience must include the following: managing and administering an industrial hygiene program or other similar programs; conducting surveys, evaluations, and samplings; consulting and advising on the industrial hygiene program or other similar programs; and educating and training on various subjects, such as: hazards, maintenance and sanitation practices, and other like subjects.

Physical Effort: Investigations and surveys involve moderate physical exertion, including carrying equipment, climbing, standing, walking, crawling and bending, as well as the use of personnel protective equipment, and occasional work in confined spaces.

Working Conditions/Environment: The incumbent is exposed to a wide range of hazardous and unpleasant conditions during investigations, including toxic materials, high noise levels and temperature extremes. Use of protective clothing and equipment is required.

Education

One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
