Immigration Paralegal – Houston

The Immigration Paralegal will support Family Based and Deportation Based Practice Areas at our law firm in Houston. S/he will be the technical expert in the field of paraprofessional and serve as an advisor for all technical questions; assist with legal requests for the firm and staff attorneys; ensure that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhere to approved budgets.

Major Responsibilities

  • Utilize internal system, review, add, clear all tasks and actions set forth. · Prepares application, obtains proper documents and helps clients understand them.
  • Explain the process and requirements from an attorney to the client.
  • Provide research and training support to more junior paralegals utilizing databases and legal libraries.
  • Prepare bond applications and VAWA cases.
  • Call/email clients to explain the process for each case.
  • Validate and oversees the preparation of legal documents.
  • Coordinate with attorneys on special requests or highly complex projects.
  • Provide and encourages continuing education.
  • Efficiently and optimally utilize paralegal knowledge and ensure adequate knowledge transfer/sharing.
  • Maintain client files online and offline.
  • Update clients on progress and explaine next steps.
  • Prepare and filie complete paperwork in a timely manner, keeping track of application in MyCase system of record and ensuring all bases are covered.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new hires or new internal procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain Process Documentation and/or Training Manuals/Guides.
  • Provide/update adequate Checklists and Questionnaires for each process.
  • Meet deadlines for all cases, escalate when appropriate, and use time effectively and productively.
  • Responsible for processing legal mail related to family-based and deportation-based cases, as assigned by the Mail Clerk
  • Responsible for working with Accounting regarding past due balances; explaining to client where case stands, updating on case, contract questions, etc.
  • Responsible for walk-ins.
  • Serves as an escalation party for all complaints and customer issues.
  • Assigns and Re-assigns cases to Legal Team members.
  • Together with the Lead Attorney handles all high tasks with an external deadline to confirm compliance in those matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, equivalence of experience will be considered.
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English highly preferred.
  • Paralegal Certification preferred.
  • 2+ years of related experience in the immigration field
  • Takes full responsibility for personal actions
  • Has extensive knowledge of or will quickly learn department processes
  • Ability to foresee and propose process improvements
  • Embraces change
  • Must have people skills required to work with clients who are anxious and distressed

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
