JOBTHE SANITATION DISTRICTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTYinvites applications for the position of: Hourly- Laboratory Technician I, II - Marine BiologySG-030-23E The Sanitation Districts are currently recruiting to fill multiple Hourly Laboratory Technician I, II positions in the Technical Services Department Marine Biology. LOCATION: TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT, LABORATORY SECTION, MARINE BIOLOGY LABORATORY, JOINT WATER POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT, CARSON ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Perform a variety of sample/data collection and instrument deployment activities at sea, and conduct or support the laboratory analysis of marine biological samples. JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of a Supervising Scientist, the incumbent conducts or participates in the collection and analysis of a variety of biological, chemical, and physical oceanographic samples. Within the laboratory, the incumbent performs sediment sorting for infaunal specimens and assists taxonomists in the analysis of marine benthic invertebrates; prepares specimens for taxonomic study; maintains taxonomic documents; provides curatorial care of biological samples; performs fish tissue resection for bioaccumulation studies; processes and analyzes marine sediments for qualitative determinations and quantitative grain size analysis; uses laboratory equipment, including a variety of microscopes and balances; maintains laboratory records using multiple database applications. At sea, the incumbent participates in a broad array of biological and chemical sampling and analysis; assists in oceanographic sampling by means of CTD water column profiling and light irradiance measuring packages; performs epibenthic specimen sorting and processing; rigs and deploys various sampling gear such as otter trawls, sediment grabs, water sampling devices; uses shipboard winches and capstans or other specialized gear and equipment; and performs related duties as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Applicants must possess a valid California Class C driver license; -AND- for the LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I: Any education or experience which provides the knowledge and skills listed. For the LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II: Twelve semester units of college chemistry; -AND-two years of increasingly responsible laboratory experience involving the performance of complex biological analysis, preferably in an ocean monitoring program. A bachelor's degree in a laboratory science may substitute for one year of the required experience. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience aboard marine vessels in coastal waters; familiarity with oceanographic sampling gear; knowledge of the local marine environment; taxonomic identification of marine invertebrates and fishes; SCUBA certification and coastal ocean diving experience; experience piloting a small marine vessel in coastal waters; degree in marine biology or similar field of study.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: 2016 TNI Standards; Horizon LIMS; fundamentals and principles of biology and related sciences as they pertain to established marine and oceanographic analytical methods, techniques, equipment, and materials; fundamentals of marine fishes and macroinvertebrate taxonomy; the classification, morphology, and ecology of marine benthic infauna; principles of data analysis and statistical inference; standard laboratory techniques, equipment, and materials. Ability to: conduct detailed taxonomic studies of marine invertebrates; use compound and stereo microscopes for extended periods of time; sort and identify marine organisms; draw sound conclusions regarding the validity of the data produced; perform fish tissue resection; conduct biological sampling at sea under a wide range of sea conditions.
