Performs a variety of judicial duties in Hidalgo County Criminal Courts including deciding the merits of cases, hearing and evaluating evidence and witness credibility, analyzing laws and rules, making findings of fact and conclusions of law and issuing oral or written decisions and orders to resolve cases.

Examples of Work Performed:

Coordinates the judicial process at the Detention Center to ensure cases proceed in a timely manner.

Conducts arraignments/magistrations and the setting of bonds.

May be called upon to preside over extraditions, writs, including the review of probable cause in cases, and other legal proceedings that the District Judges of Hidalgo County may deem necessary.

Conducts judicial functions as appropriate and must adhere to applicable legal requirements when performing duties as set by the District Courts of Hidago County, including all requirements for setting bonds.

Conducts hearings.

Hears evidence.

Compels production of relevant evidence.

Rules on admissibility of evidence.

Issues summons for the appearance of witnesses.

Examines witnesses.

Swears witnesses for hearings.

Makes findings of fact on evidence.

Formulates conclusions of law.

Recommends the rulings, orders or judgement to be made in a case.

Regulates proceedings in a hearing.

Does any act and takes any measure necessary and proper for the efficient performance of the duties required by the order of referral.

Attends meetings and training as required.

Performs all other related duties as required.

Other:

Primary job duty locations will be Hidalgo County Detention Centers in Edinburg and any other detention area utilized by the County of Hidalgo, Texas.

Weekdays, weekends, holidays, and other times as deemed necessary by District Courts of Hidalgo County.

This is not a Civil Service covered position.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited law school.

Must have at least four (4) years of experience in criminal law. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas for at least four (4) years.

Must be a resident of Hidalgo County.

Certificates, Licenses and Registration:

Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas is required.

Must be a resident of Hidalgo County.

Must be trained and maintain the appropriate courtroom legal and judicial education required of a Texas Judge asked with performing magistrations.

Must be eligible to vote in the State of Texas and Hidalgo County.

Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.

Must be able to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires a broad knowledge of criminal law and proceedings as well as an ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds.

Must have the ability to speak English and Spanish.

An ability to make well-reasoned decisions in a timely manner based upon legal knowledge and experience is also essential.

Pay: $120,000.00 per year
