Heavy Equipment Operator Position Summary:
The position is responsible for performing pit-crushing duties, which include filling the hopper with mined ore. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Works under general supervision.
Heavy Equipment Operator Discretion:
Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Does not typically require exercising independent judgment.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities for a Heavy Equipment Operator: may include some or all of the following:
- Operates the loader in the pit and puts ore through the primary crushing facility
- Monitors the crushing operation which includes the feeder, conveyors, and crushers
- Performs routine loading duties around the site
- Assists the wash plant during downtime
- Pushes the dome or stockpile as needed
- Completes the daily operational logs
- Maintains work area in a safe and clean condition according to company standards
- Attends safety meetings and abides by all safety rules set forth by the company and governmental regulatory agencies; ensures that hazardous conditions are reported and corrected.
- Work safely. Comply with all Safety rules, policies, and procedures (LOTO Program, JSA’s, MSHA, etc.).
- All other duties and responsibilities are assigned from time to time by the company or its designated representative.
Heavy Equipment Operator Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education/Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred
- Required - one to three years of heavy equipment/loader experience or six months of experience plus completion of a certified heavy equipment training course
Communication Ability:
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to understand and be understood by others.
Math Ability:
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic.
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.
- Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense, rules, and similar past experiences to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
- Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
Equipment Skills:
- Read and use a tape measure
- Use a utility knife safely
- Must be able to operate a personal computer plus related software and other various standard office machines and equipment necessary to complete duties.

- Constant sitting, reaching and bending
- Frequent climbing and smelling
- Occasional standing, walking, talking/listening, and stooping/kneeling
- Occasional lifting up to 100 lbs

- Constant exposure to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions
- Frequent exposure to high places, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, and vibration
- Occasional exposure to wet, humid conditions
- Exposure to loud noise
- Requires wearing of personal protective safety equipment
