Heavy Equipment Operators operate a variety of heavy-duty road-building equipment in the construction and maintenance of highways and highway equipment, including snow removal.

The regular hours for this full time position are as follows, and will include call-in for snow events:
-Winter: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm
-Summer: Monday-Thursday, 6:00am - 4:00pm

Essential Job Functions

Operates and maintains heavy-duty highway construction vehicles, machinery and equipment, such as dozer/crawler, distributor, motor grader, four-wheel drive end loader, pavers, shouldering machine, chip spreader, and roller.

Operates equipment in snow removal, including trucks with plows, wings, and sanders.

Keeps records of work performed and time involved in performing the work.

Maintains availability and accessibility by phone for overtime work during snowstorms or when other road damage occurs.

Works safely and follows safety practices and standards of the County Highway Department; responsible for reporting and/or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.

Reports to work when scheduled, with minimum use of sick leave, to build up sick leave balance for income protection for unexpected illness.

This is a public service position, and employee is required to be courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times, with the public and clients. Also establishes and maintains a courteous, cooperative and respectful working relationship with other employees, supervisors, and public officials.

Physical demands: Approx. 80% of time is spent operating heavy equipment involving exposure to mechanical hazards. Uses arms and legs to operate controls on equipment. Other 20% is spent performing other duties, such as, patching, shoveling, using the loader, etc., which involves walking, climbing on uneven terrain; uses various equipment such as hand and powers tools, chainsaws, shovels, pick, hammer and brooms. Work is performed in all types of weather, including rain, snow, and extreme cold and heat; dramatic shifts in temperature, and dust, noise, vibrations and mechanical hazards are factors. Steel tip boots and other protective items are worn. Requires near and far vision for driving vehicles, inspecting road and operating equipment. Reads and writes instructions and records. Uses verbal communication with other staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation of various heavy-duty mechanical highway equipment, and the methods and materials used in servicing highway mechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in highway construction and maintenance.
  • General knowledge and experience in snow plowing, sanding, mowing, patching and road maintenance operations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in varying climatic conditions.
  • Ability to use a variety of highway construction and maintenance equipment proficiently and safely; mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work with the general public.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports of time and activities.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision when necessary.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalency.
  • Two years experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy-duty highway equipment or specialized highway construction duties.
  • Previous work experience performing road grading/snow plowing, road construction, light/heavy equipment operation and manual labor.
  • Successful passing of machinery operations skills tests.
  • Must be available for overtime work.
  • At the time of hire, must have valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement.
  • Within six months after hire, must obtain tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Must have good driving record.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen due to CDL requirements.
