Health Educator/Project STOP

SUMMARY: To assist the Project Director and Health Educator staff in implementing, operating, and conducting Project STOP, a Substance Use, Tobacco, Outreach and Prevention Program, funded by US HHS SAMHSA, directed toward youth, 9 -20 years old within the targeted areas (33142, 33147).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To educate children, youth, and young adults, ages 9 – 20, about healthy choices and decision making. The Health Educator leads discussions on substance use prevention, social and emotional growth and development and more.
  • To goal is to prevent and reduce progression of underage drinking, use of e-cigarettes/vaping, and marijuana by encouraging youth to be active in their choices regarding their personal health, wellness and safety.
  • The Health Educator will serve as an instructor for two evidence based curricula. The Too Good for Drugs program developed by the Mendez Foundation, which serves 4th grade to High School and The VOICES program, a program of self-discovery and empowerment for girls. This program is gender specific for girls ages 10-19.The Health Educator will also implement the Positive Community Norms (PCN) campaign developed by the Montana Institute. This is a detailed approach to educate the community with data and statistics of positive behaviors already taking place within their community. The aim is to spread awareness of existing health data and perceptions to the community to create/promote healthy conversations in schools and within families.
  • To assist in building prevention infrastructure capacity in schools, families, and communities by utilizing evidence based curricula, peer leadership, youth driven extra-curricular activities, parent involvement programs, and community activities.
  • To collaborate with program /community partners to implement social norms/environmental strategy campaigns at their respective sites.
  • To have students complete and obtain any necessary program paperwork and signatures necessary to implement evidence-based programming. This includes pre-surveys and post- surveys.
  • To gather, track, and safeguard program information as necessary.
  • To provide verbal and written weekly and monthly data and information to the Project Director for review. The Project Director will oversee all activities and the Health Educator will work with the external program evaluator to include important data into a Quarterly (Q) Progress Report and Annual Progress Report to be submitted via in SPARS (SAMHSA Performance Accountability Report System).
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Project Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Health, Education, Humanities, or Social Studies, required. Master’s Degree, preferred,
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in health and prevention programs working with youth and young adults.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience of administrative support and compliance.
  • Must have a car and a current valid Florida Driver's License. Proof of car insurance (50/100K Recommended).
  • Ability to travel throughout Miami-Dade, as needed or necessary. Mileage is reimbursed.
  • Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Must have basic computer skills with some knowledge of MS Word & Excel.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and a drug test prior to starting work.
  • Must be able to sign an Affidavit of Good Moral Character.
