Title: Head of Litigation and Employment Law

Where you'll work:
Our hybrid workplace model offers the freedom to work fully remote or occasionally in one of our offices. This is a remote position with a hybrid option for candidates based in Charlotte, NC or New York, NY.

How you'll contribute:
As Head of Litigation and Employment Law, you will report to the General Counsel and (1) oversee the litigation, customer relations, and employment law functions; (2) provide strategic input on the direction/function of the legal and compliance organization, and (3) exercise influence and leadership with business partners and colleagues, at all levels, including the executive level, to help achieve results.

The candidate must be able to provide excellent legal advice and representation, have the ability to think strategically, have the experience and communication skills necessary to counsel business partners at the highest levels of the company, have demonstrated a high degree of discretion and judgment, have the intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of the changing legal climate on issues relevant to a national provider of income and protection products and services, and have a strong commitment to personal growth, demonstrating leadership and developing talent.

In this role, you'll get to:
  • Manage a broad range of litigation and pre-litigation matters, including disclosure and reserving issues, meeting e-discovery obligations (including managing legal holds and document collections), managing outside counsel, budgeting, and reviewing outside counsel invoices
  • Oversee the customer relations function, which reviews and responds to customer complaints and regulatory inquiries
  • Advise internal clients at all levels with respect to employment matters
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes and business practices and providing input on company and legal strategy

We're looking for people who have:
  • J.D. degree from accredited law school
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • 15 years of litigation experience with life insurance and annuity products, preferably with experience at a public company
  • Experience and knowledge of employment law desirable, but not required
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Superior oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated talent for, and commitment to, leadership and developing talent
  • Demonstrated record of attention to detail, sense of urgency, ability to handle substantial workload effectively (i.e., establish priorities, adhere to deadlines)
  • Willingness to partner with colleagues and business partners to contribute to success of the company
  • Ability to thrive as a team member in a high-performance culture
