Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer of Varo, the Head of Enterprise & Operational Risk Management is a key member of the Risk Management leadership team. The Head of ERM/ORM will be responsible for providing oversight and effective challenge across Enterprise and Operational risk areas including Issues & Events Management, New Product Approval, Third Party Risk Management, Risk & Control Self Assessments, and Business Continuity Planning. The Head of ERM/ORM is the accountable executive for risk identification, aggregation, and escalation to Senior Management and to the Audit & Risk Committee of the Board (ARC).
What you'll be doing
- Lead and develop a team of risk professionals with responsibilities across Enterprise and Operational risk, with the goal of developing risk management as a competitive advantage for Varo
- Establish an education and awareness agenda for colleagues across Varo including training and support to instill a robust risk culture conducive to stable operations, regulatory compliance, and the achievement of strategic objectives
- Engage broadly with business partners, risk colleagues, and internal audit to support and strengthen the overall risk management system
- Maintain a robust Risk Appetite Framework (RAF) including qualitative risk appetite statements, Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), and associated thresholds
- Administer an annual RAF review and approval process, across the lines of defense and with the Board
- Execute a robust Issue Management and Operational Risk Events program, and provide reporting to senior management and the Board
- Conduct root cause analysis to inform remediation efforts, provide oversight and effective challenge on remediation planning and execution, and leverage the firm’s GRC platform to enable monitoring of remediation efforts
- Administer Varo’s governance infrastructure including policies, programs, standards, and charters, while leveraging technology as a facilitator to this effort
- Maintain a robust Risk & Control Self-Assessment program for the Bank. Provide reporting on results, common themes, and/or trends to senior management and the ARC
- Serve as the Secretary for the Enterprise Risk Committee responsible for its execution, effectiveness, and evolution, and support the Chief Risk Officer in the coordination of the ARC
- Produce risk reporting and escalation, including the Quarterly CRO Report for the Enterprise Risk Committee and the ARC
- Ensure the adequacy and effectiveness of the Third Party Risk Management and Business Continuity programs
- Administer a robust New Product Approval process ensuring any new products or services align with Varo’s risk appetite
You’ll bring the following required skills and experiences
- Bachelor's Degree required; graduate study preferred
- 12+ years of experience in financial services working in risk management, audit and/or compliance
- Expertise in Enterprise and Operational risk management in a regulated institution
- Ability to influence change; create a shared, future vision for the risk function
- Excellent collaboration, engagement, and communication with stakeholders across the lines of defense
- Reliable with strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deliverables concurrently, in a dynamic environmentAbility to establish the foundational success factors of a small, remote, and diverse team
- Possess the expertise, confidence, and gravitas to work autonomously at all levels of the organization
- Experience interacting with and presenting to a Board of Directors
- Prior ‘fintech’ experience is a plus
