Job Description
Summary:
The Materials Science, Chemistry and Computer Science group at the National Renewable Energy lab has an opening for a Hazardous Materials Maintenance Technician. This position will be responsible for backing up researchers when they perform maintenance, make repairs, and make improvements to—equipment utilizing hazardous materials. This includes incorporating known best practices from group-to-group, and being hands on when assisting with equipment-based activities while wearing PPE including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This includes systems that may be contaminated with toxic, pyrophoric, flammable, corrosive, and nano materials.
Duties:

Assist with hazardous sources changes (gas cylinders and bubblers)
-
Perform preventative maintenance and repair on a wide variety of research equipment containing hazardous materials
-
Rebuilding contaminated components such as vacuum pumps
-
Decommission old equipment
-
Glovebox catalyst changes
-
Coordinate a glovebox and fume hood cleaning schedule
-
Audit and teach hazardous waste management and procedures (e.g., matching PPE to a given activity) to researchers
-
Fill breathing air canisters and track integrity of miscellaneous PPE
-
Diagnoses of equipment malfunctions and effect repairs to restore equipment to required operating condition.

Troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems

Assist with design and fabrication of new equipment
-
Specify and initiate procurement of necessary equipment and supplies to perform project and maintenance/repair activities

Communication with stakeholders inside and outside of organization

Data entry for planning, executing and closeout processes

Providing technical information to first responders in the event of an emergency

Work with other subject matter experts to write clear procedures for repetitive activities
Responsibilities require compliance with NREL's environmental, safety, and health policies and procedures, vigilance to working safely, and continuously promoting a safe working environment.

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 10 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Frequent use and broad knowledge of related practices, techniques, and standards. Wide-ranging application of theory, concepts, principles and requirements of the discipline or field supported. Advanced skills in research techniques and practices. Excellent communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

Experience with operation of portable, hand-held toxic gas monitoring equipment

Ability to plan and procure components as needed for activities

Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Research Technician V / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
