Founded in 1925 by Hattie Bishop Speed as the J.B. Speed Memorial Museum with an encyclopedic collection, the museum has grown to an impressive collection of American, European, Old Masters, Decorative, Modern, and Contemporary art. From 2012 – 2016, the Museum was closed for a $60 million renovation and expansion project led by international architect, Kulapat Yantrasast. The new Speed now boasts improved gallery and exhibition space, a state-of-the-art cinema and a park-like environment that integrates with the University of Louisville.

In August 2021, Raphaela Platow became the seventh Director of the 97-year-old organization. With two decades of museum leadership, Platow brings a deep passion for and knowledge of art and culture in the region, and a proven commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Speed Art Museum is seeking a Grants and Foundations Manager to play a critical role on the Advancement team. The Grants and Foundations Manager is responsible for researching, soliciting, and securing grants from philanthropic organizations that support the mission and work of the Speed Art Museum. They must manage the entire grant process from research to reporting to assure funder guidelines and criteria are met. This person will serve as the primary grant writer. The position reports directly to the Director of Advancement, Corporate and Foundation Relations.

CANDIDATE PROFILE AND REPSONSIBILITIES

• Proactively research and identify local, regional, and national grant opportunities that align with the mission and work of the Speed Art Museum including the execution and completion of grant applications to secure major gifts from foundations and philanthropic organizations.
• Work with multiple departments to identify funding priorities, including but not limited to, education and outreach programs, special exhibitions, operating support, conservation, acquisitions, staff diversity, programming, cinema, and special projects.
• Manage proactive cross-departmental communication and regular follow-up to solicit information needed for funding proposals and reports.
• Manage the writing of high-quality grant proposal narratives, applications, and supporting documents.
• Oversee acknowledgement of all grants, including grant agreement compliance, progress and final reports, and other necessary correspondence.
• Build on the recent growth in national grant funding for the Speed Art Museum to attract other regional and national funding opportunities.
• Work with project leads to oversee program budgets, timelines and objectives for all grant-funded programs. in collaboration.
• Identify and present new funding opportunities to Director of Advancement, Corporate and Foundation Relations for consideration and approval.
• Draft sponsorship proposals for individual and corporate asks when required.
• Maintain university partnership proposals and reports.
• Work with Finance and appropriate project lead on budget and financial plans for grant applications.
• Assist with collection, input, and maintenance of donor information into database, including ensuring records are current and accurate.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
• Minimum 3 years prior experience in Grant Writing, Development, or related
• Experience in or knowledge of the local, state, and national arts communities preferred
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to conduct research to gather information regarding grants and foundations
• Ability to plan and organize
• Ability to work accurately and efficiently and keep track of numerous projects simultaneously
• Proficient in Microsoft Office software
• Ability to use judgment and discretion; to keep confidentiality; to exercise tact and diplomacy.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The Speed is prepared to offer a salary in the range of $45,000 - $55,000, commensurate with experience.
