About the Department
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at NC State University is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and public outreach. The department offers undergraduate degrees in anthropology, criminology and sociology, and graduate degrees in anthropology (MA) and sociology (MA, PhD). The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).
The Department enrolls 520 undergraduate majors and provides ca. 25,000 semester credit hours of undergraduate instruction each academic year. In addition, the Department has approximately 40 Masters students and 50 PhD students during a typical year. Approximately 70 of these students are in the sociology PhD program, and 20 are in the anthropology MA program.

Essential Job Duties
This Graduate Academic Advisor Coordinator will provide academic advising in the MA in Anthropology and PhD in Sociology programs. This includes assessing students’ needs, goals, interests, and prior academic experiences in order to guide them in the design and implementation of a successful academic plan. The advisor will be expected to collaborate with Anthropology and Sociology faculty members to address the academic advising needs of Anthropology and Sociology graduate students, particularly students completing coursework for their degrees. The advisor will act as a resource for faculty and students on issues related to implementation of curricula and academic policies. The advisor will help students make transitions and complete degree milestones and access the full range of university resources.
Additional responsibilities consist of assisting with student orientation and recruiting events; assisting graduate program directors in implementation of projects and activities pertaining to student advising, assessment, and wellness; managing travel authorization and reimbursement requests and assistantship appointments for students; and serving as point of contact for current and prospective Anthropology and Sociology students. The advisor is expected to conduct meetings/conference calls after 5:00pm and/or on weekends to accommodate the needs of the graduate student population.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience.
Other Required Qualifications
- Professional administrative experience and demonstrated ability to master knowledge of database software such as SIS (student information systems).
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree and at least 1 year experience in student support and relevant administrative work.
