JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician is responsible for maintaining base data layers in the Town’s GIS databases which include addresses, streets, parcels, subdivisions and other town assets related to Public Works and Utilities. Incumbent will also be responsible for reviewing development plans to assign addresses and street names for new development and to communicate this information with the public and other governmental entities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a journey level classification in the GIS job family. This class is distinguished from the senior level positions by the performance of more routine mapping duties, minimal project management and/or application development responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.

  • Updates GIS data for Town assets using CAD files, development plans and GPS software and equipment;
  • Assigns and maintains addresses in the GIS database that are required by and/or requested by Town departments for development or permitting purposes;
  • Reviews development plans and assigns street names in conformance with the Town’s Street Naming and Addressing Policy; Creates and maintains street centerlines in the GIS database;
  • Prepares communications with internal/external customers regarding addresses and/or street name information;
  • Updates parcel and subdivision information for new development;
  • Creates and/or updates maps and graphics using GIS software and related equipment;
  • Assists with other mapping and/or data projects;
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)
Education and Experience: Associate degree in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, IT or a closely related field and 1 year of experience in GIS computer work or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Experience in editing and maintaining GIS data layers, such as parcel boundaries, addresses, streets, utility data, etc. using ESRI products is preferred.

SKILLS
  • Creating and editing GIS data from CAD files, development pans or GPS equipment;

  • Written communication skills;
  • Basic math skills.
