Overview: Forest Inventory Technicians Wanted!

Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC®) is seeking to hire multiple full-time, seasonal positions to support forest inventory work across its 211,000 acres of coastal redwood forests for summer 2023. Under the supervision of the Forest Inventory Manager and Senior Inventory Forester, successful candidates will cruise forested stands among California’s redwoods.

Responsibilities:

• Perform inventory and timber cruising across a variety of forest types.
• Safely navigate narrow logging roads and steep, difficult terrain by truck and foot.
• Collect data on permanent plots installed through our forest properties.
• Aid forestry and stewardship group staff in timber harvest planning and special projects.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Progress towards an associates or bachelor’s degree in Forestry or related discipline preferred.
• Prior cruising experience OR completed coursework on Mensuration / Forest Measurements with a passing grade.
• Candidates must have experience using dichotomous keys to accurately identify tree species.
• Must be oriented to working in the woods, as most of the time (95%) will be spent in the field.
• The candidate must have the ability to use a directional compass and read topographic maps.
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• The candidate should be eligible to operate a company vehicle under company policy guidelines.
• Ability to travel between 10 - 25% work time.
• Experience with ESRI technology and WSG Mobile Map software preferred.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and communicate.
• The employee is occasionally required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• The employee must have ability to use directional compass and topographical maps.
• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outside adverse weather and field conditions including steep difficult terrain.
• As the employee is often required to use four-wheel drive, all terrain vehicles, and chainsaws, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; and fumes or airborne particles.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• This position may require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather/rubber gloves, sleeve protection and a hard hat.
• Position travels 95% of the time within a local nature (within 100) miles usually by truck.
