The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
The Supervisor of Fitness and Wellness programs is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of fitness activity areas, fitness/exercise programs & services (group exercise, personal training, assessments), and fitness education programs (certifications, CPR/AED/FA). Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to: delivering excellent customer service, ensuring appropriate coverage of programs and staffed areas during operating hours, management of assigned fitness areas (weight/cardio areas, studios), and supervision (hire, train, develop, and review) of assigned part-time employees. The position reports to, and receives general supervision and direction from the Sr. Manager Competitive Sports and Outdoor Adventures

Essential Functions and Tasks

  • Provide direction and oversight of fitness and wellness programs in accordance with the mission and goals of the department, Student Union, Inc., and Student Affairs.
  • Coordinates and develops a comprehensive fitness program including, but not limited to, Group Exercise, Personal Training and Fitness Program special events and workshops.
  • Supervise all fitness education within the program to include instructor recruitment, teaching Fitness programs, hosting and implementing instructor and trainer certification, and offering in-service and continuing education opportunities for staff development.
  • Develop budget proposal, yearly, for all Fitness and Wellness program needs.
  • Assist in management of program budget to include; monitor payroll, recommend purchases and monitor revenue generating goals including revenue reports for personal training.
  • Hires, trains and supervises 15-20 student assistants and part-time staff working as fitness instructors and personal trainers.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings, auditions for group instructors, creates class schedule and continuously assess quality of instruction. In the absence of scheduled instructor, may be required to teach a class, (if certified in format)
  • Ensures all programs and services offered are NCCA-accredited and led by NCCAaccredited instructors and trainers.
  • Manages Personal Training client intake forms and health history questionnaires and assignments of clients for the personal training program.
  • Manage all staff certifications with SU HR to ensure they are valid and current.
  • Provide communication, as necessary, in written or verbal format in the form of monthly/annual reports, evaluations and assessments of all fitness/wellness programs to provide insight on budgetary information, program information and participation statistics
  • Develop interest in new and emerging fitness and related instructional programs; conduct participant satisfaction surveys to evaluate quality of programming and to help determine new programming. * Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance to industry standards and safety procedures.
  • Responsible for the inventory and to ensure the safety and quality of functional fitness equipment, including appearance and assist in recommending future purchases.
  • Monitor classroom/studio fitness equipment, communicating repairs and maintenance needs to Director of Facilities. Purchase fitness functional classroom equipment as necessary.
  • Contribute to integrative wellness model through partnerships with CAPS, Student Health Center to develop wellness programs with other campus wellness programs, initiatives, or committees.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with the following: Student Union, Wellness Center, Department of Kinesiology, Student Life, Associated Students and other departments as appropriate.
  • Partner with SUI Marketing department to support the promotion of Spartan Recreation fitness and wellness programs through marketing and outreach to the campus and surrounding community through direct messaging, membership drives, newsletters, and campus events.
  • Partner with SUI to facilitate an inclusive environment that inspires innovation and effective student development.
  • Partner with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensures learning outcomes are developed and assessed annually for the student staff.
  • Assist Spartan Recreation and Student Union, Inc. team members in supporting special event programs, as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Demonstrated experience in administering comprehensive fitness and wellness programs, direct management goals, facilitate change, and create innovative programs.
  • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience including selecting, training, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising employees.
  • Demonstrated experience in training of fitness and wellness staff and programs.
  • Knowledge of personnel management, budgeting, and facilities management.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate, organize and prioritize projects with attention to detail, and to compile, prepare, write, and review reports.
  • Strong service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and inter-personal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of fitness and wellness program safety standards, procedures, and protocols. * Requires strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in computer applications such as: Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, etc.) Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as an outdoors and indoor facility program-oriented environment.
  • The physical demands of this position are described below
  • Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
  • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
  • Lifting and Carrying, often 10-25lbs, frequently 26-50lbs, occasionally 50-75 lbs.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone
  • Dexterity of hands, fingers, and wrist to operate a computer keyboard and calculator
  • In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5p.m., Monday - Friday, may work evenings and weekends as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sport Management or a related field or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
  • 2 years’ experience in a collegiate group fitness and/or personal training setting.
  • Current CPR/First Aid and AED certifications required or must be obtained within the first month of employment.
  • Current and valid certification is required at time of hire, as well as through the duration of employment - Instructor certification in group fitness and/or personal training by NCCA accredited certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA, NASM, ACSM)
  • Current national wellness certification preferred (NWI – CWP, AFPA- Health & Wellness Coach Certification, etc.) or able to obtain within first 6 months of hire.
  • Within the first month, all new employees are required to complete the following online training sessions through CSU Learn, the University's employee training platform. Employees will be enrolled in the training soon after their appointment is processed and will be notified via email from CSULearn@sjsu.edu.

i. CSU - Injury and Illness Prevention Program - one time course
ii. CSU - Preventing Discrimination and Harassment for Supervisors – required every two years
iii. CSU - Sexual Misconduct Prevention Program (Title IX) - required every year
iv. Data Security and FERPA - required every two years
v. Hazard Communication Cal/OSHA - one time course
vi. SJSU COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols Training - one time course

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or related field of study, and minimum of three-five (3-5) years of experience working in a collegiate recreational setting (collegiate preferred) of which at least three (3) years must have included supervisory experience.
  • Lead NCCA accredited programs ACE or nationally accredited NCCA Instructor to teach Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer certifications.
  • Health Coach Curriculum Instructor.
  • Demonstrated experience in large student recreation centers, student unions, student activities, and residence life or student development proving oversight for campus fitness programs.
  • Experience in a large, non-profit corporation.
  • Involvement in professional societies and organizations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Fusion Member Management system and Mind Body registration software.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate the role campus life plays in recruitment, student success, retention, and graduation, and a commitment to college student development and student leadership.

Background Check and Fingerprinting
