The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applicants for the two (2) vacant positions of Facilities Maintenance Specialist. There are openings in both day and night shifts. The position on the night shift carries with it a shift differential pay.

The position performs repairs and preventative maintenance on electrical, plumbing, heating, residential and commercial grade kitchen equipment, painting, building envelope, and other mechanical systems and apparatus on the UWL campus (academic buildings, residence halls and student centers).

As a successful candidate, you will perform a majority of the work independent of supervision and must be able to make correct judgment calls in responding to various types of emergencies. This position reports to the Building Maintenance Manager. These position is required to respond to occasional after-hours emergencies.

As the successful candidate(s), you will be:
  • Required to maintain current field-related skills and knowledge and its associated codes by attending training programs, conferences, and subscriptions or memberships of professional organizations.
  • Must comply with all University of Wisconsin System workplace expectations, including safe work practices.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with plumbing, mechanical and electrical repairs.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license, meeting the criteria for driving a state vehicle.
  • Ability to grasp, lift and/or carry tools, equipment or supplies, up to 75 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Physically be able to work in various environments without adverse physical reaction, e.g.; in confined areas; within extreme temperature ranges; in hot, noisy, dirty or dustfilled areas; at heights above 30 feet, etc.
  • Physically be able to work in various positions, i.e. with arms above your head for periods of time; bending, twisting, crawling, squatting, climbing, stooping or kneeling; on scaffolding, ladders or stairs; standing, sitting or walking, while continuously performing job functions.
  • Ability to wear protective equipment, i.e. respirator, breathing apparatus, hearing, or eye protection, etc.
  • Analytical skills necessary to diagnose and correct the cause of both common and infrequent failures in equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of mathematical skills necessary to prepare cost estimates, maintain inventories and prepare charge-back documents.
  • Ability to effectively deal with stressful situations such as responding to urgent or emergency situations involving system failures.
  • Initiative to problem-solve and identify job functions that may serve as preventative measures to minimize future repairs or maintenance.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in a directly related field.
  • Experience working in construction, carpentry, maintenance or related field.
  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Experience working in a higher education institution.
  • Knowledge of essential job functions and ability to safely perform the duties with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn relevant software and/or computer languages in order to operate preventive maintenance, work order, time reporting and inventory control programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing, using the English language, in various situations, i.e. face to face, via phone or two-way radio, correspondence, editing reports, taking messages, etc.
  • Ability to read blue prints relating to building equipment and systems.
