About the Position
Under the general supervision of the Shelter and Housing Program Director, the Facilities Assistant-Maintenance has the primary responsibility for cleaning the shelter in such a way to promote health, safety and sanitation while reducing the spread of infection.
 ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Performs maintenance duties as assigned which assure the buildings, fixtures, equipment and grounds preservation and upkeep
- Follows and completes the shelter’s daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedule such as:
- Collects and bags all garbage from the shelter, placing the tied bags in a closed dumpster
- Disinfects and cleans garbage and trashcans, and changes bags daily
- Washes and sanitizes bathrooms fixtures daily with germicidal solution
- Using germicidal solution, wet mops all washable floors daily including kitchen, bathroom, hallways, storage areas and entrances/exits
- Washes facility windows (inside and outside) and walls using germicidal solution as scheduled or needed
- Performs assigned general maintenance repairs such as
o basic carpentry repairs
o floor repairs
o minor plumbing and electrical repairs
o appliance repairs
o window glass replacement
o lock repairs
o bulb replacement and other related repairs
- Mulches, weeds, removes thatch, aerates, and trims and edges around flower beds, walks, pathways and walls.
- Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools; integrates soil amendments; plants bulbs, flowers, ground covers, trees and shrubs; applies mulch
- Inspects trees and landscape plants for pests and disease
- Prunes trees, shrubs, vines and hedges
- Performs snow and ice removal with hand tools and power equipment
- Participates in emergency drills and environmental safety activities, as requested
- Ensure all equipment is in proper working order
- Performs mowing, trimming and edging turf areas using riding mower, push mower, weed whip and edger
- Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency and Company directives related to building operations and work safety
- Maintains the inventory, storage, and distribution of equipment
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or General Education Equivalent required
- Proven experience as custodian, janitor or in a similar role
- Landscaping experience (preferred)
Other Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must complete a background check.

- Travel is required and access to reliable transportation is essential
- Requires willingness to work and travel alone

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position is located at the YWCA SHR Emergency Shelter, a 24-hour facility. Hours are available in 4 - 6 hour daytime shifts to include occasional nights and weekends. Tasks involve possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.

- Ability to travel in varying weather conditions.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
o Frequently walk, use hands to finger, climb a ladder, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talks or hears
o Often required to stand and sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, squat or crawl
o Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds
o Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
o The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud
o Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier and fax machine
COMPENSATION: This is a part-time, hourly position, with the pay range of $18-$21 per hour. Weekly hours vary, not to exceed 29 hours per week. Flexible hours - occasional weekends and on-call may be needed for emergencies.
