Summary:
Seeking a skilled, motivated, and reliable individual to fill the full-time position of Event Sales Manager. The position is responsible for selling and promoting Durham Convention Center.

The Durham Convention Center is owned by the City and County of Durham and operated by Spectra Venue Management. Qualifications:
  • College degree or equivalent relevant work experience in an arena, convention center, hotel, performing arts venue, stadium or related venue.
  • Experience in sales hospitality.
  • Enthusiastic and positive thinker.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong PC and data processing skills; working knowledge of MS Word and Excel.
  • Possess or ability to obtain a driver’s license.

Duties:
  • Generate and secure new business utilizing inside and outside solicitation.
  • Prepare written proposals utilizing audio-visual, equipment, food and beverage, event space and other facility-related services.
  • Represent the facility to potential clients; conduct facility tours; answer questions and provide information regarding facility services.
  • Enter and maintain account information in booking software.
  • Finalize contractual arrangements; collect deposits.
  • Find new avenues to access groups of potential contacts for solicitation.
  • Develop ideas and plan logistics for sales blitz themes.
  • Prepare weekly reports and correspondence as assigned.
  • Provide timely updates to the Director of Sales and Marketing; provide additional support to the sales team as requested.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as required.
  • Ability to travel as required.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge Of:
  • Modern office procedures, methods and related computer equipment.
  • Business letter writing and basic report preparation.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Principles and procedures of financial record keeping and reporting.
  • Must possess excellent grammar skills and use of the English language.
  • Customer service best practices.
  • Must have excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications and word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation and internet software.

Ability To:
  • Perform responsible, repetitive and detailed work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative.
  • Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Prioritize work and effectively resolve workload issues.

  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
  • Make basic arithmetic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) either manually or by operating a calculator.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Intellectual/Social Demands:
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time constraints and in moderate to high-pressure situations.
  • Position requires constant attention to precise details and accuracy of specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than 3 steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time.
  • The employee will be in a leadership role; this requires directing others either verbally or in writing to complete tasks in the prescribed time frame.
  • This position also requires constant use of interpersonal skills including, but not limited to: the ability to direct/motivate/inform staff and foster collaboration, greeting and directing clients verbally and in writing.
  • Employees must be able to recognize and resolve conflicts and be able to openly communicate in writing and verbally with clients and determine an optimal solution to their concerns.
  • Employees will frequently communicate via telephone, email and in-person with others and exchange accurate information.
  • This position required employees to frequently work both independently and as part of a team.

Physical Demands:
  • While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee will frequently operate a computer and other office devices such as booking software, radio, telephone, copy machine, fax and printer.
  • Employees will also frequently move about inside and outside the facility in various areas before/during/after events in the course of directing clients/groups to desired locations.
  • Employee must constantly communicate via radio, telephone, email and in-person with others to exchange accurate information.
  • Employees may occasionally be required due to business demands and event operations to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:
  • The essential functions of this position are usually performed indoors in an office environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal during non-event days and moderation to loud during event days.
