The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Southcoast Region Highways and Aviation is looking for a Equipment Operator - Journey 1/2/3 Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:
This flex position strategically allows for a clear career path for you, with promotional opportunities. Depending on qualifications, the incumbent will perform equipment operations commensurate with journey 1 through 3 level work. The focus of this position will be to utilize various types of heavy and light duty equipment to perform maintenance activities in support of State of Alaska mission and maintenance of infrastructure.
Journey level 1 operator use of heavy-duty equipment will be in a training capacity. Journey level 2 has obtained a Class A CDL and met the competencies of a WG53 equipment operator. This position performs similar tasks to a Journey 3/Lead excluding those airport tasks that require ARFF (Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting) certification. Lead/Journey 3 performs airport and highway maintenance at a State maintenance station that includes a rural Part 139 certificated airport. Responsible for maintaining State highways, airports, seaplane floats, bridges, and docks in a safe and fully operable condition for use by the traveling public. Complies with all applicable Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and State of Alaska rules and regulations concerning maintenance and operation of highways and airports.
Who we are looking for:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:
- Willingness and ability to perform summer and winter highway maintenance including: snow and ice control, blading, pavement repair, pavement painting and striping, traffic control, sweeping, sign and fence installation and repair, equipment maintenance and other maintenance duties as assigned.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment associated with directed tasks which include light duty vehicles, dump/plow trucks, sweepers/blowers, distributor trucks, graders and loaders.
- Enter information on log and inspection sheets, as well as various required reporting forms.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with supervisor, crew, agency officials, project personnel and the general public.
Vacancies in this job class are filled through Union referral, except for promotions, demotions, transfers, and emergency appointments.

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Equipment Operatory Journey 1
Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N-Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire, and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
Equipment Operatory Journey 2
A Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required at time of hire. A conditional hire approval can only be given for endorsements. This means that the proposed appointee must successfully obtain an N-Tanker endorsement within 90 days of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
ARMS & AMMUNITION REQUIREMENT
This position requires the use of firearm or ammunition. If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence you may not hold a position in this job class in accordance with the Federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208). A "misdemeanor crime of domestic violence" means an offense that:
- is a misdemeanor under Federal or State Law; and
- has, as an element the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by a current or former spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited with the victim as a spouse, parent, or guardian of the victim.
FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Equipment Operator - Journey 1, 2, 3/Lead level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. Please respond to all of the minimum qualification questions.

Base salary for:
- Equipment Operator - Journey 1 …........... $4,505.00/Monthly
