Environmental Educator

Seasonal Position

March thru November, 40 hours per week (weather permitting)

Supervised by the Interpretation & Education Programs Manager

Objective: Environmental Educators deliver high-quality educational programming both on and off site. Educational programs are student led, discussion based, and engage students in field experiences that are an extension of the classroom and directly related to school curriculum. In the summer, Environmental Educators will work with camp, scout, adult, and family groups. They also help facilitate our daily programs and special events. Major Duties:

  • Deliver environmental education programs to school and private groups of all ages
  • Assist in greeting and organizing charter bus groups, and adjusting the daily schedule as necessary
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of new education programs
  • Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service
  • Distribute park information and answer guest questions
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of special events
  • Assist with daily interpretive programs throughout the mountain
  • Assist with monitoring and education at the Swinging Bridge and Linville Peak
  • Serve as a frontline representative by modeling and teaching conservation of the natural world
  • Record regular citizen science weather observations
  • Operate a variety of audiovisual and other equipment in connection with programs or exhibits
  • Serve as a parking attendant in various capacities, as needed
  • Responds to emergency calls and takes appropriate action following guidelines and procedures
  • Responsible for maintaining litter-free grounds
  • Other duties will be assigned as necessary, especially during peak visitation days

Qualifications:

  • Working towards/have a degree in biology, environmental studies, history, or a related field
  • Experience developing and implementing outdoor educational programs or the ability to learn
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, adapt to change, and to prioritize effectively
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Capable of learning local flora and fauna, and how to handle educational animals
  • NC Certified Environmental Educator (or working towards) preferred
  • Have reliable transportation, personal vehicles are occasionally used on the mountain
  • Ability to be flexible with the daily/weekly schedules based on visitation and weather
  • First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to get certified
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
