POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Engineering Technician (Student Position)
REPORTS TO:
- As an engineering technician, works in close collaboration with the project manager, in service of ACUASI.
- As an Employee of Northern Embedded Solutions, reports to the President, Northern Embedded Solutions, LLC.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Required: 1 year related experience
Preferred: 2 years working in scientific communication, system design, or documentation
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Required: Currently enrolled an accredited college in a science or engineering degree program. Program requirements can be waived on evaluation of expertise.
Preferred: Experience composing presentation and documentation media for engineering and scientific projects. Experience designing and repairing drones during flight operations.
FLSA Status: Part-Time
Hourly Rate: $12-20, Depending on experience

- Drone assembly and repair experience
- General engineering and computer science skill set (enough to be a little dangerous)

- Aviation background
- Model RC aircraft and/or drone experience

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position Summary: This position is for an engineering technician working with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, ACUASI. There is no minimum amount of hours worked, during the academic year this position can work up to 20 hours per week, not to interfere with education. Outside of the academic year up to 40 hours per week may be available.
The engineering technician (student position) will work with engineering and management to document operational theory of systems, write reports on system operations, compose stories about how the operation of a system can impact stakeholder, and create video content on operations. Documents, stories, and content will be constructed in pursuit of integrating unmanned aircraft into Alaska’s airspace.
Engineering technicians will be expected to communicate with engineering and management staff to become familiar and represent the direction of the organization, and to explore activities.
The engineering technician will also support general engineering operations as necessary, and may be asked to design circuit boards, compose small integration scripts, or repair aircraft damaged in flight operations.
Engineering technician will also have dedicated time for market technologies research and stay up to date with emerging technologies and practices. The design goal of the position is to develop an employee with a useful set of skills, expose them to a wide verity of work, and synergistically develop motivating stories they and others in the organization will use to maintain progress.
This position may be assigned additional responsibilities outside of media creation depending on expertise.
The engineering technician must be located in Fairbanks Alaska for regular in person meetings with the project manager, and engineering team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Maintain communication with other staff Monday through
Friday and be available occasionally for collaborative work within those hours. The applicant must be able to maintain project focus for long periods of time.
Assist project managers in estimating time required for projects, clearly documenting reporting development progress, and identify and implement useful analytical tools.
The applicant is not expected to have prior knowledge of every challenge encountered, on-the-job independent research and learning will be a part of the daily routine. The applicant must be able to identify what skill sets are necessary, identify sources to learn those skill sets, justify the importance of the training to management, complete necessary training, and apply acquired knowledge to the responsibilities of the position.
Not to interfere with education requirements, attend whatever regular or impromptu meetings ACUASI requires for purposes of coordination, strategizing and planning.
Assist in field operations for exposure to practical operations challenges, understanding of scope and real world capabilities of the organization, or when engineering expertise is required.
