This engineering position is within the Distributed Generation (DG) Engineering team as part of the Distributed Energy Group (DEG). The DG Engineering Team supports the integration of renewable energy in the distribution grid by ensuring technical and regulatory compliance of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
This Engineer I/II role will be responsible for performing DG interconnection studies, refining DG interconnection study processes, and recommending and implementing improvement initiatives. The candidate needs to have a technical background and be comfortable working in an agile, fast-paced, technical environment.

The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide technical expertise and support for all DG projects and studies.
  • Collaborate with the DG Lead Engineers, Senior Engineers, and Study Engineering team to deliver technical support to project owners throughout the process of evaluating the DG project interconnection.
  • Perform DG studies and review studies done by other staff regarding specific jurisdictional requirements for effective interconnection to the grid.
  • Ensure adherence to interconnection standards and utility best practices across multiple jurisdictional areas.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for customer operations and other functional areas. Have a knowledge of the business process, system functionality and database tables, data analytics, and workgroup metrics.
  • Actively participate in special assignments, including representing the DG team for DG-related issues among other organizations within Duke Energy.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer I:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree
Engineer II:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience

Desired Qualifications
  • Minimum of one (1) year of engineering experience
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Knowledge of distribution system electrical design, operation and reliability
  • Experience with Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
  • Knowledge of inverter based generation and an understanding of protective relays, reclosers and application of distribution protective devices
  • Experience with reading and evaluating electrical one-line diagrams (OLD)
  • Familiarity with DER interconnection policies and procedures
  • Understanding of basic principles of Power Engineering and Power System Analysis
  • Knowledge of distribution system study tools and technologies
  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Experience and demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings, and provide direction to others
  • Demonstrated effective teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day direction while maintaining performance expectations
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and tasks
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
