Director of Nursing – Emergency Department
DEPARTMENT: Emergency Department REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Nursing
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Emergency Department Nursing Staff

JOB SUMMARY:
Serves as a member of Nursing Leadership and Management Council. Collaborates with leadership and staff of other departments/services, and physicians to ensure quality care is provided to the patients/families served. Position maintains and monitors clinical standards, and maintains shift line responsibility for fiscal, human, and material resources.
Supervises the day-to-day operations of the department to ensure safe, high quality, effective nursing care is provided to all patients in a hospital environment.
Demonstrates ability to function in their respective department as an RN.
Essential Functions/Accountabilities:
Quality:
- Actively participates in the identification and resolution of problems/issues and concerns that impede the delivery of quality care to patients and families
- Identifies ways to improve customer service, streamline care processes and lower costs
Service:
- Plans, implements, and evaluates processes involving the department to optimize efficiency, effectiveness, and quality within the department and across other departments
- Participate in evaluating patient satisfaction and address any opportunities for improvement
Finance:
- Participates in departmental fiscal plan (budget) that reflects departmental needs based on external and internal environments to ensure the allocation of funds and meet budget expenses
- Manage departmental budget and speak to any variances monthly at minimum
People:
- Establishes practices that increase retention rates to ensure job satisfaction within the department which allows the hospital to maintain qualified staff
- Improve employee performance through on-going counseling, coaching, delegation, and education of employees with assistance of the Executive Director of Nursing in order to encourage staff in the progression from novice to expert related to the care/treatment of patients
- Initiates and supports change by utilizing the input of experts, critical thinking, and the empowerment of others
RESPONSIBILITES:
- Acts as the clinical expert in the department serving as a resource to the staff.
- Supervises and evaluates staff
- Payroll: Signs payroll, on-call slips, ETO and exception slips for staff
- Scheduling: Assist House Supervision with scheduling, approving ETO and requested days off along with requested pick-up shifts
- Human Resources: Attempt to allow staff to resolve issues as a team. If unable to resolve, use conflict resolution, mediate, mentor and follow chain of command as needed.
- Risk Management: Evaluate risk and opportunity for the department. Follow up on any event reporting or concerns timely.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Minimum associate degree in fields of nursing
Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in fields of nursing (BSN)
Experience:
Minimum one to two years of applicable experience
Five years preferred.
Certifications in the field of expertise.

Experience managing/supporting team members
Review daily and weekly reports and make recommendations for improving productivity and efficiencies

Proficient in Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and Outlook
Licensure/Certification:
Kansas State Board of Nursing License preferred

Sitting in the same location or standing/walking: required to stoop, climb or lift light (<10 lbs) material or equipment.
