Job Duties/Responsibilities Please note that the duties for this position will be performed on-site and
in-person.
Electricians perform skilled journey-level electrical work in the
installation, repair, service, alteration, and maintenance of District
electrical systems and equipment as part of the Maintenance &
Operations Branch.
- Laying out, assembling, installing, testing, maintaining, servicing, and
repairing such items as conduits, meters, panels, control boards,
sensors, motors, lights, fans, heaters, fire alarms, bell and buzzer
systems, field lighting systems, clock systems, telephone systems,
switchboards, and wall, floor, and ceiling receptacles.
- Installing interior and exterior wiring for equipment and appliances and
cuts, drills, and channeling concrete floors and walls for conduits and
related installations or repairs.
- Bending and threading conduits and installing wires and cables in
conduits.
- Preparing reports pertaining to the testing and maintenance of electrical
systems and equipment.
- Preparing job estimates and sketches of work required.
- Climbing ladders and poles to install or repair lamps.
- Assisting a Senior Electrician in planning and developing modifications
to existing electrical systems.
Minimum Requirements EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent
educational proficiency, supplemented by courses in electrical theory
and electrical construction code from a trade school.
EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a recognized electrician
apprenticeship program or five years of experience in the installation,
alteration, and repair of commercial and industrial electrical wiring
systems and equipment, of which one year must have been at the
journey-level.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work effectively at heights of 50 feet or more on ladders,
scaffolds, or poles and work under buildings and in confined spaces.
- Adequate color perception to identify color-coded conductor wires.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, crawl, climb, reach overhead, crouch,
kneel, balance, push, pull, and safely lift and carry heavy weighing items
while inspecting or assisting projects when needed.
- Ability to work safely in confined spaces.
- Adequate hearing to detect unusual sounds from transformers, fixture
ballast, and fire alarms.
- Normal sense of smell to detect burning transformers, breakers,
conductors, switches, ballast, and relays.
SPECIAL :
- A valid California Driver License.
- Use of an automobile.
Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate will have completed a five (5) year State of California
or recognized equivalent Joint Labor-Management Electrical
apprenticeship program and have worked as a Journey-level Electrician
in commercial, industrial, or institutional installations and construction.
Further, the ideal candidate will possess broad technical skills and good
working knowledge of:
- Practices, materials, and tools of the electrical trade.
- Design, construction, installation, and maintenance of electrical
equipment and systems.
- Federal, State, and local electrical codes, orders, ordinances, and
regulations.
- Pertinent safety orders issued by the Department of Industrial Relations
and safety practices relative to high voltage electrical systems.
Additionally, we are seeking candidates with a demonstrated ability to:
- Analyze malfunctions of electrical equipment.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Work effectively with others.
- Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications relating to
electrical designs.
- Operate electronic testing equipment such as meters and Personal
Digital Assistants (PDA).
- Use and operate a computer, tablet, or other computing device.
Employment Selection Process The employment assessment for these positions tentatively consists of a
computerized multiple-choice test, performance test, and a
communications skills test. Portions of the assessment may change,
depending on candidate population and other considerations.
The content of the multiple-choice test will tentatively include:
(1) electrical codes
(2) electrical concepts
(3) wiring and circuits
(4) troubleshooting, fabrication, & installation
(5) lighting
(6) symbols
Applications will be reviewed of individuals who successfully pass the
multiple-choice test to determine whether they meet the minimum
requirements for this position.
Please Note: Candidates who have taken any portion of the assessment
(computer-based multiple-choice written test & performance test)
applicable to this recruitment within the last four (4) months, will be
ineligible to participate in any test part within that time period.
Furthermore, candidates who have taken the Electrician multiple-choice
assessment within one year, will be able to recertify their scores only for
the multiple-choice portion of the assessment.
