Job Title: EHS Floater
Department: Early Head Start
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Job Status: Full-Time
Reports To: Child and Youth Director
Supervises: This employee does not supervise other employees
Position Description: The Early head Start Floater is responsible relieving the regular classroom teacher for meal breaks, planning or training time. The Floater is fully responsible for the students in the classroom during this time and will continue the planned activities and programs for the children, following the curriculum and schedule as outlined by the regular teacher and as written in the lesson plans.
Essential Functions:
Conduct age-appropriate activities for children as necessary to produce positive learning outcomes- Present learning materials in an engaging manner that stimulates the furthering of child development
- Maintain safe and nurturing classroom environment conducive to appropriate child development
- Observe, record, and report significant individual and group behavior(s) as requested by the EHS Teacher, EHS Manager, or Child & Youth Director.
- Attend required training and professional development opportunities
- Additional duties as assigned
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide classroom coverage for absent staff to implement classroom activities
- Administer first aid to children requiring immediate medical attention
- Assists other EHS teachers and staff for the purpose of supporting completion of department goals
- Able to support through word and action the Wesley Community Center’s Mission statement and the mission’s core values of integrity, excellence and commitment through completion of other duties as needed and assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be interested in and willing to learn the best practices in Early Head Start child development theory; Must possess ability to write and speak clearly and informatively in English, as well as to work with diverse populations; Must be able to communicate important messages and learning themes to children and parents; Knowledge of or willing to learn minimum standards of care and education for developmental needs of children; Bilingual, Spanish-speaking preferred; Customer service oriented and able to effectively manage difficult or emotional client situations; Able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; While in this position, the employee is expected to seek to understand, communicate appropriately and effectively, build a positive, professional rapport with all clients and staff.
Education & Experience: Required: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred: Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential; an Associates’ degree (A.A. or A.S.); or CDA, A.A. or A.S. education in progress. At least three years’ experience working with Early Head Start and/or Child Development programs.
Work/Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to work constructively and cooperatively in a team environment. Employees in this position will work primarily in a classroom setting where they will interact with children and other teachers to address child development needs; this will require the employee to use active listening skills, while also having to stand, walk and stoop to complete job duties; Must be able to lift and carry at least 25 pounds unassisted; floater may be required to move classroom equipment; Floater may also need to assist in physically moving child(ren) from one area to another. Must be available to work a flexible schedule, with primary hours of operation being 7:15 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Employee may be required to work weekends in support of program services and special events.
