New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an innovative and interdisciplinary child welfare and social services agency that provides essential support to families with at least one family member who has a disability and/or chronic medical condition. Children and their families enter into NAC’s services through the city’s foster care system, preventive services, or by way of community referral. All of our clients have access to a wide array of services including intensive, multi-faceted support for children’s educational needs.
As such, NAC is looking for a creative problem solver to join a fun, hardworking team as an Education Specialist for High School and Post-Secondaryclients who will support NAC families in their participation in wide-ranging school/schooling related matters and in community-support opportunities. Additionally, the Education Specialist will assist in the development and delivery of opportunities related to the promotion of caregiver and student self-advocacy and empowerment.
*Please note, NAC education staff is currently operating on a hybrid schedule—part remote, part in-person. Most in-person activity, in recent months, has been limited to school visits, home visits, and group outings. In-office presence has largely been “as needed” or if preferred to working remotely/from home. We anticipate, in the coming months, that NAC staff will begin to increase its in-person work particularly around school visits, IEP meetings, and classroom observations, and that more in-office time will be required but that has yet to be determined.
DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM:

Description of Responsibilities:
- Primary responsibility is to support NAC families in accessing appropriate educational and developmental supports and services.
- Participate in the creation of service plans with specific goals and objectives for youth and family.
- Liaise with school staff and city agency officials and offices to ensure school/program compliance with federal, state and city laws and regulations.
- Work with teachers and service providers on matters of academic support and related services.
- Participate in NAC case conferences, school visits, classroom observations, IEP meetings, and other meetings, as necessary.
- Serve as a resource to NAC social workers/case and care managers, as well as, to caregivers and youth in providing technical assistance and guidance with educational matters.
- Collaborate with colleagues within the education department and with colleagues from other NAC departments including medical and mental health, transportation, and recreation on a variety of projects and problem solving efforts.
- Assist with and/or facilitate NAC-based programming for youth and family, presentations to staff, and education-focused workshops.
- Collaborate on grant reporting, grant applications, and other funding opportunities.
- Manage caseload data
- Prompt submission of progress and case notes
- Maintenance of billable hours
Required Education and Experience:
- Master’s Degree in any relevant field
- Bachelor’s Degree with 2-3 years of relevant experience.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and City regulations concerning schools and special education.
- Knowledge of and/or experience with the New York City public school system and/or service providers a plus.
Required Skills:
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral skills.
- Willingness to travel throughout NYC, as needed
- Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
