The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a flexible and highly organized individual to join the Education Department as an
Early Childhood Educator.
This is a non-exempt position without benefits, scheduled to work up to approximately 27 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30).

The Early Childhood Education Program at VMFA is a Reggio-inspired, interest-led and student- centered program for children ages 3 months to 5 years old, and their caregivers. The Early Childhood Educator is responsible for the coordination of the Group Visit program (primarily Sep-May). They develop, refine and teach lessons and themes for Group Visits (3-5 years), and, in collaboration with the other staff, Young @ Art (ages 2.5-5 years). The Educator plays an active role in the execution of summer drop off camps. This individual also collaborates with team members to design and install an annual exhibition. This individual will also periodically work one Saturday a month supervising adjunct faculty instructors for Wee-Kids Workshops.
The Early Childhood Educator reports to the Early Childhood Education Coordinator in the Division of Art and Education and collaborates with other members of the Early Childhood Education team.
Duties Include:
- Coordination of the VMFA Early Childhood Group Visit Program, with duties including corresponding with school administrators, registering and managing schedules in VMFA’s registration software, updating and maintaining the Group Visit webpage, and tracking inventory for the program.
- Developing, refining and teaching lessons and themes for Group Visits (3-5 years), and, in collaboration with the other staff, Young @ Art (ages 2.5-5 years).
Leads the execution of Curiosity Camps (June) and Early Childhood Education’s Annual Exhibition, when Group Visits are not active (May through August).
Works periodically one Saturday a month supervising adjunct faculty instructors for Wee-Kids Workshops.
Utilizes project-based and Reggio-inspired pedagogy, the VMFA collection, music and movement activities, and children’s literature to create content for Group Visits, Young @ Art, and when requested, Resources for VMFA Learn.
Creates and edits brochure and social media content and other projects, as requested.
Assists in the management of interns, volunteers, and adjunct faculty.
Stays up to date with best practices in the field and attend VMFA programs as necessary to gain content knowledge.
Minimum Qualifications
- Previous experience in a teaching environment with children ages 3 months-5 years old.
- Demonstrated knowledge of early childhood development, specifically children ages 3 months-5 years of age.
Experience working in studio art disciplines, including incorporation of the fine arts and art materials into prior teaching lessons.
Demonstrated use of sound judgment, decision-making, and knowledge regarding safety and security protocols for supervising student groups.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate student directed conversations.
Strong customer service, oral and written communication skills are expected.
Possesses the ability to work independently on various administrative and organizational tasks and be able to anticipate program needs and address them with minimal supervision.
Must have excellent organizational skills and a professional work ethic.
Availability to work weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and teaching experience with Reggio-inspired and inquiry-based pedagogy.
- Past experience working with young and emerging professionals, including high school and/or college students.
Prior professional experience in the Art Education or Museum Education field.
Prior or related experience with graphic design software including Photoshop or InDesign, or similar software.
Experience installing fine art exhibitions.
Certification through the Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED.
Special Requirements
