In support of Gift of Life Michigan's (GOLM) core purpose and values, the employee is professional, compassionate, and determined, working to honor life through donation. The Donation Coordinator l is responsible for coordination of all activities associated with recovery and utilization of organs for transplantation. This includes responding to initial donor referrals, evaluating potential donors in conjunction with Clinical Administrator on call (CAOC) and/or Medical Director, evaluating Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI), organ donor medical management, organ allocation, and overseeing surgical recovery of organs for transplantation and/or research. Other duties and projects may be assigned by the Manager or Director of Organ Services.
Primary Duties:
- Responds on site to potential donor referrals from hospitals.
- Searches donor registry(ies) for documentation of the patient's decision to donate.
- Evaluates and screens potential donors by thoroughly reviewing relevant hospital records and documents required data in the Electronical Medical Record (EMR). Consults with CAOC or designee to discuss donor suitability and as requested.
- Engages the potential donor's hospital care team to assess the clinical situation and plan of care as it relates to brain death evaluation or withdrawal of support.
- Initiates organ donor cases to include obtaining blood/sputum/urine specimen(s), labeling, and packaging for shipment to designated facility and documents donor information into EMR as required.
- Medically manages brain-dead donors in conjunction with CAOC and/or designee, and in consultation with the GOLM medical director as required.
- Collaborates with GOLM, hospital professionals, transplant centers, and medical examiners to ensure necessary information is communicated and specimens obtained.
- Allocates organs in accordance with OPTN protocols.
- Prepares for organ recovery and huddles with OR team members as needed to review procedure for surgical recovery of organs.
- Participates in huddles and conference calls at designated times during care of donor as specified in GOLM policies and procedures.
- Coordinates all aspects of multi-organ recovery in the operating room and reviews donor information with surgical recovery teams and hospital personnel as appropriate.
- Completes documentation of recovered organs and biopsies and verifies packaging, labeling and transportation in accordance with OPTN policies.
- Completes chart review and QA requirements to ensure accuracy of documentation and completion of record at conclusion of organ recovery and as requested post recovery.
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Paramedic with 18 months acute and/or critical care experience or other formal healthcare training with at least 18 months in an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO). Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelors of Biological Science is preferred.
- Must obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) before completion of introductory period.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of OPO, hospital, transplant and medical professionals required.
- Self-motivated and possess ability to meet requirements of a demanding on call schedule required.
- Strong organizational and personal skills required.
- Proven ability to handle highly stressful situations in a calm and efficient manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team required.
- Strong awareness of personal limitations and demonstrates a willingness to seek advice or assistances as needed.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and electronic medical record systems.
