Job description
The Director of Residence Life primary responsibility is to facilitate a culture of care for students through advocacy of their needs, supporting them in crisis, providing resources and education while encouraging personal growth and accountability which promotes a healthy, safe, and inclusive community at Saint Xavier University. The Director provides leadership for five coeducational residence halls to create a positive, developmental residential experience that supports student learning.
Residence Life
- Lead and manage the Department of Residence Life, including direct supervision of an associate director, an assistant director, and indirect supervision of two graduate assistants, student resident leaders, and student office workers.
- Manage the Ellucian Residence Life module (Colleague) for the University’s database and the eRezLife student portal
- Manage housing assignment responsibilities including initial assignment, room reassignment, contract agreements, on-line confirmation, room change requests, and withdrawals
- Oversee housing operations in collaboration with the Associate Director, Facilities Management, Public Safety, and Information Technology
- Together with the Student Life Staff select, train, and conduct on-going development of Resident Assistants, Resident Peer Academic Leaders, and Residence Hall Association Executive Board
- Together with the Associate and Assistant Director create and implement a plan for education, social, and spiritual programming in the residence halls
- Implement philosophy, objectives, and goals of Residence Life into daily activities
- Collaborate with the Director of Campus Ministry to facilitate residence hall ministry
- Work directly with Enrollment and Marketing to recruit new resident students
- Together with the Dean of Students, closely monitor housing capacity and provide weekly reports to appropriate administrators
- Assist with the institutional budget planning process by providing annual projections and rate comparison information
- Create assessment tools for residence life
- Support First Year Orientation through program development, program presentations and general interactions with students and parents
- Develop and manage a departmental and activity budget of $100,000; assist Dean of Students in the development of a total housing budget of $4 million
- Work collaboratively with Campus Life, Facilities Management, Auxiliary Services, Public Safety, Counseling Services, the Health Center, and other student service departments to provide exceptional service to students
- Insure oversight and functions of Residence Housing Association (RHA) and organization advisors
- Seek constructive and rewarding opportunities to engage faculty in the lives of students, and create linkages between academic affairs and residential programs
- Along with the residence life staff, continue efforts to develop the first-year living experience for residential students—and look for ways to creatively enhance programs and learning opportunities for returning, upper-class students—as part of the University’s overall retention efforts Partner with campus healthcare providers, including the Health Center and the Counseling Center, to monitor data for cases of un-vaccinated students and COVID-19 status.
Student Life/Dean of Students Office
- Be a visible and engaged leader throughout campus, building bridges between students and administrators.
- Demonstrate creativity, a strong work ethic, and collaborative energy to address issues such as the current political climate, COVID-19, student mental health, and social justice concerns.
- Provide support to the day to day operations of the Dean of Students Office/Student Life.
- Serve as a conflict mediator and in bias resolution.
- Support student housing paraprofessional staff through training and development , especially as it relates to confliction resolution and de-escalation strategies.
- Participate in the Care Team as a case manager.
- Serve in the on-call rotation for emergency assistance and crisis intervention in coordination with the Student Life Professional on-call staff.
- Support initiatives related to serving Saint Xavier University’s identity as a Hispanic Serving Institution.

Student Conduct
- Assist in oversight of the student conduct system by reviewing incident reports and serving as a hearing officer.
- Conduct prompt, equitable and impartial administrative investigations related to alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct and other University policies.
- Advocate for and support students, especially in crisis or urgent situations, by hearing concerns or complaints, communicating as appropriate with family members, and making referrals to internal or external resources.
- Masters degree in Higher Education or a related field of study.
- Progressively responsible positions of leadership, with five or more years experience in a higher education setting with work in residence life and housing.
- Demonstrated experience in conduct/judicial systems in higher ed, leadership for crisis/risk management
- Strong oral and written communication skills; exceptional organization and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain strong relationships, and build consensus and support.
- Sensitivity to issues related to socioeconomic class, gender identity and expression, sexuality, race and ethnicity, privilege and power relationships, and transitions to adulthood.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required for programming elements of the position and on-call needs.
- Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm with on-call and some nights/weekends
