SUMMARY
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for all aspects of nursing care and operation delivery in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. As a Registered Nurse, the DON is also responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs clinical operations of the ASC
- Performs a clinical function within the patient care environment
- Works closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and the Center's Medical Director and through subordinate staff to assure all clinical aspects of care delivered at the Center meet established standards. Works with Surgeons to implement specific patient care orders and protocols
- Works with the Chief Administrative Officer to lead employee relations and human resource activities (e.g., recruits, hires, trains, motivates individuals) to meet patient care needs within established budgets and staffing patterns
- Directs subordinate staff to manage supplies and inventory to assure that necessary supplies and equipment are available for patient care needs. Utilizes company processes to assure appropriate accounting and internal controls are maintained for ordering and receiving materials and equipment
- Demonstrates effective communication skills in order to motivate the ASC staff
- Works with Chief Administrative Officer, The Medical Director, and Quality Specialist to continually meet requirements of AAAHC, State Licensure, CMS Conditions of Participation
- Provides a systemic approach in working with patient grievances officer to resolve any issues of patient care
- Creates, analyzes, and provides routine and adhoc reports on ASC activities as directed.
- Strategizes methods to meet/exceed monthly budget parameters by working closely with the Chief Administrative Officer
- May assist the Chief Administrative Officer with preparation for governance meetings
Clinical Quality:
1. Assesses, plans, and evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patients care to achieve identified outcomes and delivers safe patient care according to facility policy and procedure.
a) Assesses patient status on admission and on an ongoing basis.
b) Implements appropriate standards of care based on assessment data and patient's own goals. Goals are mutually set with the patient and the family.
c) Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
d) Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.
e) Adheres to all facility policies and procedures when providing patient care.
f) Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.
g) Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.
2. Assumes a leadership role in the provision of quality nursing care for patients receiving care.
a) Analyzes nursing care provided in the facility related to the established standards of care.
b) Interviews, selects and retains qualified staff to meet facility needs. Also assures replacement of marginal staff members before he/she has negative impact on peer relationships or morale.
c) Responsible for direction, teaching and management growth of other clinical leaders
d) Oversees and participates on Performance Improvement Committee to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of mission of the facility.
e) Responsible for ongoing accreditation programs in areas of quality improvement, risk management, infection control, facility and fire safety.
f) Participate in the orientation of staff.
g) Responsible for interpretation, in-service education, implementation and compliance with OSHA guideline to assure minimal exposure for patients, staff, physicians and visitors.
h) Participates in developing standardized patient education programs as requested.
3. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based on age-specific needs utilizing developmental perspective.
a) Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in the assessment, treatment and care undertaken.
b) Appropriately modifies approach to the patient based upon patient age utilizing a developmental perspective.
c) Provides appropriate interventions related to safety issues.
d) Participates in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care provided.
e) Demonstrates ability to coordinate the nursing care provided in the facility.
f) Assigns patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and abilities of staff.
4. Demonstrates appropriate and continued knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
a) Directs the smooth functioning of the center.
b) Assigns personnel according to clinical competence.
c) Assumes charge of cardiopulmonary emergency situations until physician arrives.
d) Interprets facility policies for personnel.
e) Directs center personnel to assure maximum productivity and quality of patient care.
f) Staffing patterns are utilized.
g) Assists in the evaluations of assigned staff.
Teamwork/Accountability/Integrity:
1. Utilizes time effectively.
2. Fallows established facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
a) Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility.
b) Adheres to tardiness policy.
c) Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor.
d) Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor.
3. Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
a) Maintains accurate records of controlled substances.
b) Documents nursing care and physicians' orders according to facility policy and best practice guidelines.
4. Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
a) Demonstrates to competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
b) Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies supervisor.
c) Completes all Teammate/patient event and Variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by policy.
d) Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility.
e) Practices infection control, standard precautions and universal precautions as instructed or trained.
f) Maintains work area and equipment in a neat, organized manner.
5. Completes appropriate financial management responsibilities.
a) Provides input re: equipment needs/supply needs.
b) Completes patient charges in accordance with facility procedure and per facility policy.
c) Demonstrates sound cost containment techniques.
6. Assists with housekeeping tasks as necessary to provide a safe environment for patient's, teammates, physicians, guests.
7. Performs all other duties as assigned by management.

1. Maintains and evaluates own clinical expertise and clinical practice.
a) Attends 75% of unit based staff meetings and demonstrates review of minutes for any meetings missed.
b) Provides in-services as requested by management
c) Participates in scheduled performance appraisals and demonstrates dedication to ongoing performance improvement.
2. Responsibly demonstrates and the importance of continuing education to the performance of facility responsibilities and growth in profession.
a) Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of professional developments through printed material or other sources.
b) Attends professional training seminars when appropriate for job development and shares information with other Teammates.
c) Attends and participates in all applicable facility training and development workshops scheduled by the facility
d) Maintains work area and equipment in an organized and clean manner
e) Maintains dress and appearance according to standards as observed by management
f) Maintains up-to-date knowledge of job description, role, and responsibilities through continuing education activities
g) Maintains certification requirements and submits required evidence of certification to facility management for teammate file

d) Discusses patient information with other health team members in an appropriate environment
e) Documents patient's significant other's response to teaching interventions

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current California RN license.
- Bachelors in Nursing
- Current BLS, ACLS, PALS
- 2-3 years of related experience preferred.
Complexity:
Ability to take vital signs, maintain quality control standards. Must be able to multi-task efficiently and effectively and take the direction of multiple sources, while maintaining an effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to perform highly detailed work with sustained attention and ware while providing/obtaining information on numerous inquiries is paramount to success in this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to withstand long periods (66-100% of the time) of walking, standing, bending, sitting, holding limbs and or equipment for long periods of time. Spending extended periods of time verbally communicating with patients, families, healthcare team members, and visitors.
Requires a high level of dexterity for safe handling of patients, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Strenuous work environment with the ability to make decisions. The ASC is a fast paced facility with long hours of operations. Team work with other staff, providers, and upper management, is highly demanded
