Summary
The Director of Marketing and Communications at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services works in partnership with the VP of Development on the strategic development and implementation of a marketing and communications plan that increases public awareness, promotes brand visibility, and also attracts and engages new and existing funders and donors. The Director of Marketing and Communications also serves to provide executive-level strategic counsel to the CEO and executive team. This position reports to the VP of Development and oversees a Communications and Marketing Manager. As the department is expanding, this role will have the opportunity to hire for two additional positions—a content and social media manager and a marketing and communications coordinator.
This role requires a minimum of 10 years of experience and offers benefits, including health, dental, vision, and 403b. This role is based in Los Angeles and offers a flexible, hybrid work schedule. The individual in this role will need to be available for periodic onsite meetings, events, and public relations/media opportunities.
Primary Duties
Marketing and Communications Strategy
- Develops and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications strategic plan to build greater awareness of Didi Hirsch among target audiences that results in action.
- Creates communication plans for fundraising campaigns and marketing strategies for program services.
- Creates and executes a thought leadership plan that positions Didi Hirsch as the gold standard for mental health services.
Program Management
- Works collaboratively with members of the Development team as well as management across all departments to ensure marketing and communications contain accurate, up-to-date content and are consistent with agency-wide marketing and communications efforts.
- Provides oversight and direction to external agencies and vendors who provide communications and public relations services including media relations, publication design and reproduction, website development, photography and video production.
- Performs managerial duties including, but not limited to, interviewing applicants for employment; assigning and reviewing progress of assignments; managing performance and recommending salary increases.
- Coaches staff to develop their skills by encouraging further education, participation in seminars and providing learning opportunities within the department.
Content Development
- Oversees the design and production of all internal and external marketing and communication materials including annual reports, e-newsletters, brochures, program flyers, website content, social media, e-blasts, PowerPoint decks, press kits, videos, community award/recognition applications, fundraising solicitations, and collateral materials.
- Serves as primary writer and editor for external communications, including drafts for the CEO and Vice President of Development, as needed.
- Drafts compelling and engaging content that connects with key stakeholder groups, imparting Didi Hirsch’s impact.
- Oversees the design and production of advertisements for digital and print publications, collaborating with our internal graphic designer.
- Evaluates, recommends, and coordinates digital and print advertising buys.
Brand Management
- Develops the strategy and oversees execution of brand updates/refreshes as well as the Brand design and production of marketing and communication tools across all mediums.
- Ensures design and content adheres to brand standards.
- Conducts regular reviews to measure effectiveness utilizing content management software and platform analytics.
Media Relations
- Oversees the work and strategy of PR and social media agencies on:
- Developing and securing placement of feature news articles, op-ed pieces and other digital, broadcast and radio coverage opportunities, working in partnership with external public relations agency.
- Leveraging media contacts to identify new opportunities to promote Didi Hirsch’s image and position in the marketplace.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of experience in Communications, Marketing or related field.
Experience and skill in developing and executing organization-wide strategies with a variety of online and offline marketing and communications functions. This includes: branding and messaging to different target audiences, website development and maintenance, all aspects of digital, video and print production, development and implementation of social media plans and new emerging strategies, as well as working with outside vendors and elected officials. - Knowledge of current marketing and communication principles and strategies with demonstrated experience in implementation to achieve desired outcomes.
- Proven success in project management, including managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Strategic and critical thinking skills with the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
Able to engage people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, including staff at all levels, donors and funders, board members, media and general public. - Strong interpersonal, leadership and collaborative skills.
- Superior writing and editing skills including editing for content, style and grammar, as well as attention to detail with experience in writing for communications.
- Knowledgeable about nonprofit/human services sector in Los Angeles County.
- A commitment to team objectives and Didi Hirsch philosophies.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs by acquiring new skills and knowledge.
- Current California driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier.
