Salary Range: $175,000 - $280,000 Responsibilities:
The Durst Organization is looking for a Director of Government Affairs to oversee the government relations of the company. Under the direction of the Chairman of The Durst Organization, this role will work closely with various internal teams to help achieve business priorities through effective government relations. The Director will implement comprehensive government relations strategies, as well as maintain an extensive network of industry contacts especially relevant government relationships.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and strategic thinking skills, as well as an expert grasp on the local political landscape. The ideal candidate understands how to actively maintain governmental relationships; possesses superior writing skills; is a team player; is passionate about the New York Real Estate market; stays abreast of policies and political trends that may impact the organization; and understands how to communicate ROI of efforts effectively.
Salary Range: $175,000 - $280,000
- Act as the official government affairs spokesperson for the organization.
- Provide guidance to executive leadership on all governmental matters: local, state, regional, and federal. (e.g., the City Council, the State Senate, the State Assembly, and NY Governor’s Office.)
- Assess opportunities/ risks associated with public policies (existing and proposed) in relation to business activities.
- Understand business and organizational objectives to drive the development of governmental relations strategies.
- Collaborate with internal department leaders to develop and implement government relations efforts.
- Work with internal leadership, especially Marketing and Public Relations, to ensure government affairs efforts are undertaken in a manner consistent with the organization’s brand, messaging, and voice.
- Ensure messaging consistency in all public affairs materials and talking points.
- Manage government affairs consultants; establish priorities, set clear goal-oriented expectations, and ensure relationships are well maintained.
- Serve as liaison with governmental agencies.
- Develop and maintain an effective network of industry and government relations contacts.
- Represent the organization on various associations, such as business improvement districts.
- Establish strong relationships; coordinate with other organizations and associations on governmental relation matters (e.g., REBNY and other landlords).
- Manage political giving and sponsorships.
- Oversee compliance with all campaign finance, lobbying and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Develop briefing materials and trainings for company spokespeople pertaining to government affairs engagements; draft key messaging, QA material; facilitate interviews and conversations with politicians and governmental stakeholders.
- Assist Durst business leaders and consultants to successfully address issues involving governmental agencies, such as expediting permits and approval processes and public nuisance matters.
- Monitor and, as appropriate, address any negative political or constituency perceptions about the organization.
- Serve as a resource, advocate, and catalyst for sustainability at The Durst Organization. Apply the skills unique to the core job responsibilities for practical integration of sustainability into processes, standard operating procedures, and adopted business practices. Seek to empower colleagues, consultants, and tenants to prioritize and actively engage in environmental stewardship.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
- 4-year accredited college degree
- At least 10 years of work experience in public communications and political relations
- Experience developing and managing governmental relationships
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple relationships, and prioritize conversations to meet deadlines
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Able to think strategically and respond quickly
- Confident in leading, understanding how to delegate effectively, and communicate important information
- Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
