The Department of Pediatrics, the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect has an opening for a full-time Director of Innovative Training and Education.

Nature of Work:

The University of Colorado Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus seeks applicants for a full-time faculty member to support the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect (“Center”)/Section of Child Abuse and Neglect’s growth in education and training expertise. The Kempe Center is dedicated to initiatives concerning equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice (EDIJ) within the Center, our partner agencies, and the community at large. This position will guide and support efforts to increase representation of groups that have been subjected to discrimination in training and reports directly to the Section Head.

The Director of Community-Based Educational Training Services for the Kempe Center will oversee and execute managerial responsibility for integrating and coordinating all of the Center’s diverse training and educational programs. The person that serves in this role will spearhead the development, implementation and execution of innovative educational initiatives for colleagues, partners and the community. The Director will support education and learning throughout the Center to align learning strategies with the Center’s vision, with a keen awareness of social determinants influenced by racism and systemic oppression and the physical, mental and emotional well-being of families and children that are disproportionately impacted by these social determinants.

The Director will assist, develop, nurture, and sustain synergistic and collaborative relationships with offices, departments and units to develop an environment of equity, diversity, inclusion and justice, committed to cultivating practices congruent with Center values. The Director will unify training and education offerings with relevant content in collaboration with all the other Center’s Cores (Research, Policy and Advocacy, Consultation, Healthcare, and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice work) to ensure that all the Center’s educational and training offerings are of the highest quality and comply with any relevant credentialing requirements. The Director will strategically partner with the other Center core area directors to expand collaboration across the core areas, as well as to expand the reach of the Center.

The Center delivers training and educational services related to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect both externally to interested populations (such as child welfare, court and legal systems, NGOs, school districts, healthcare and community providers) and internally at the University (for example, healthcare providers, fellows, residents, medical students, and others). Program design and development for groups and individuals that assesses the effects of professional developmental needs, and monitors consistency with core competencies and goals, is necessary.

The Director will work collaboratively with the Director of EDIJ to promote an environment of professional development and learning in the area of equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice. This role serves as a proactive thought-leader and collaborator to identify opportunities for best and promising educational practices.

This position will work with various Center programs/projects to establish and maintain training metrics and to evaluate the effectiveness of training. In this collaborative capacity, the Director will partner with key stakeholders to ensure quality of educational practices, and ultimately improve the overall effectiveness and impact of the Center’s training services.

Examples of Work Performed:

Leadership / Development / Strategic Planning

  • Advise the Center Executive Director on training/educational priorities, funding needs, recruitment and infrastructure support for academic and professional education programs supporting regional, national and international learners.
  • Position the Center to be a leader in transforming the fields of child welfare and child maltreatment by actively assessing and identifying growth opportunities, in addition to cultivating new community relationships to expand educational offerings of the Center.
  • Establish and maintain ongoing partnerships with intersecting diverse groups to support different learners and to promote education to all team members by fostering a supportive, long-term professional network for those providing treatment, prevention, and support services to children and families affected by child abuse and neglect, including members of the community at-large.
  • Oversee, implement, monitor, integrate, and maintain educational and training programs across the Center, ensuring consistency with the Center’s overall strategies, objectives, and needs. Develop training offerings that guide the fields to implement practice and behavioral changes informed by research, best practices and, when possible, with cost/benefit. Identify and design inclusive activities that will support Center staff and faculty members’ professional development in effectively engaging with diverse populations.
  • Develop training standards and ensure consistency in the delivery and application of these standards
  • Implement new programs presenting more effective ways to facilitate learning. This includes seeking new approaches to teaching/training/coaching the desired skills or attributes and designing the most efficient
  • Support the development and implementation of the use of educational technology (e.g., learning management systems, use of mobile technology, remote delivery programs).
  • Promote and deliver innovative curricula, learner assessment, and evaluations of learner experiences within Center’s educational programs Analyze program data and recommend appropriate learning management systems and databases.

Financial / Administrative

  • Advocate for investment and improvement in existing and new educational programs and research.
  • Work with other Core leaders to develop and maintain the annual operating budgets for all education programs activities to ensure fiscal responsibility and stability, identifying areas of supports needed, and opportunity for resources.
  • Serve as a representative for the Section on hospital and university committees relevant to educational activities as needed

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) has been established at:

Instructor: $80k-$89k

Assistant Professor: $90k-$105k

Associate Professor: $110-$130k

Professor: $135k-$155k

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
