Diesel Mechanic

Black Warrior – Tombigbee Waterway Project (Tuscaloosa AL)

R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Black Warrior – Tombigbee Waterway Project providing machinery and facility maintenance and repair on several hundred miles of waterway and 9 locks/dams/spillways on the system. R&D is an EEO Employer.

General Description

This position repairs, services, adjusts and tests a wide variety of mobile and stationary machines and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanics. Operates and inspects diesel and gasoline-powered equipment in order to diagnose defects. Cleans, lubricates, replaces parts and/or components, and performs preventative and routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles including earthmoving equipment, pumps, generators, mobile construction equipment, etc. (All tools provided by R&D.)

RESPONSIBILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS)

  • Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance (oil changes, tune-ups, inspections, etc.).
  • Perform safety and operational inspections as required.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting with electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Replace, repair and refurbish hydraulic components.
  • Read and follow repair manual.
  • Read and interpret basic measuring equipment.
  • Perform repairs as listed in equipment manuals.
  • Locate and order parts as necessary for equipment with prior approval.
  • Install and/or replace new or reconditioned repair parts.
  • Basic testing of equipment for proper operation.
  • Operation of lifting devices.
  • Complete proper paperwork as assigned.
  • Assist other other maintenance employees as required.
  • Participates in the R&D Safety and Quality Control Programs and upholds safety and quality requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques used in the heavy equipment/machinery repair trade including diagnostic, preventive maintenance and repair methods.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Competent knowledge of fuels, oils, and filters.
  • Proven skill in mechanical repair and adjustment with basic skill to perform gas and electric welding/cutting.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret operating manuals and repair guides and work from manufacturer drawings or field sketches.
  • Ability to plan and schedule multiple tasks and effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; exercise good judgment; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing (in English).
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to perform required mechanical component and system assessments.
  • Ability to demonstrate overall safe work behavior; including the utilization of proper safety equipment and adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, overhead crane, stationary equipment lifts, truck crane, etc.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or formal training with certification in diesel engine and/or heavy construction equipment; Prefer applicable technical school diploma/certificate.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in diesel/gas-driven construction equipment diagnosis and repair using observation, measurement, and electronic analyzers
  • Must be able to read and interpret equipment diagrams, operating manuals, schematics, etc.
  • Must have valid driver’s license, commercial classification preferred.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of mobile and fixed equipment.
  • Must be able to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS

  • Frequent walking and standing.
  • Heavy Work; Exerting up to 100 pounds for force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Good manual dexterity and frequent use of power and hand tools.
  • Frequently lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range), bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling, twisting, crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
  • Vision, speech, smell and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.
  • Some field travel and occasional overtime. Occasional overnight stays.
