Job description
Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.
All About You
Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, seeks candidates for the position of tenured Associate or Full Professor of English and Department Chair, to begin fall of 2023. We welcome applications from scholars and writers in any subfield in English, including literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric and composition.
The Department of English is home to a nationally ranked graduate program (MA and PhD) as well as a strong undergraduate Major and Minor. We anticipate growth in several areas, particularly creative writing. Our students have the option to concentrate in literature, creative writing, and rhetoric and composition. We also deliver the university's core undergraduate writing program, along with core classes in literature and creative writing. In addition to maintaining a robust program of creative or scholarly projects, each faculty member in the department teaches at every level of the curriculum. The department has strong service commitments to the university and the St. Louis community.
The ordinary teaching load for tenure line faculty in the English department is 2/2, and this is typically reduced for the department chair in recognition of the time required for administrative duties.
Qualified applicants must hold a terminal degree in a relevant field, possess an ongoing record of scholarship or creative endeavor commensurate with tenured rank, excel as a teacher and mentor, possess relevant administrative experience, and demonstrate commitment to recruiting and supporting diverse faculty and students while fostering a culture that promotes justice and equity.
All applications must be made online at https://www.slu.edu/working-at-slu.php. Applicants must include: 1) a cover letter; 2) a resume/curriculum vitae that includes a list of three references. For additional information, contact the external chair of the search committee, Scott Ragland, Chair of Philosophy (scott.ragland@slu.edu). Application deadline: Dec. 1, 2022.
