Summary

The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing hands on support to our patients and doctors. Keeping the doctor informed of any treatment plans prescribed for the patient and keeping the doctor on task by preparing the patient for treatment. Patient care is Racine Dental Groups main focus and a superior level of care is expected from all employees in our group. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Follow OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen regulations related to job responsibilities.
  • Follow Racine Dental Group’s Exposure Control Plan (MMWR report).
  • Ensure patient chart has appropriate and current forms/documentation. Notify Patient Services of any forms the patient should complete before the next appointment.
  • Prepare operatory for treatment; do not open instruments until patient is in room.
  • Explain procedure to patient in terms he/she may understand (do not use internal terminology) and be sure to answer any questions.
  • Take patient’s blood pressure and pulse, document in chart.
  • Assist doctor with clinical procedure anticipating his/her needs at all times.
  • Complete “charting” as directed by Doctor. Chart documentation for each visit should include, but not limited to, date; doctor #, doctor name, and profession; chief complaint or purpose of visit; clinical findings; diagnosis or impression; studies ordered (X-rays); treatment administered; recommendations and instructions given to patient; authentication and verification of contents by Doctor; any missed and canceled appointment follow-up.
  • Take and download radiographs as prescribed by Doctor.
  • Take impressions for study models and disinfect appropriately.
  • Prepare lab slip documentation, case preparation, and delivery to lab.
  • Perform extended duties as approved by Doctor based on qualifications (i.e. make temporary crown, pack cord, etc.).
  • Ensure patient’s questions are answered before dismissing from appointment. Escort patient to main lobby or to Office Coordinator with completed Care Slip.
  • Post treatment in patient’s electronic chart.
  • Disinfect operatory and sterilize instruments following appropriate guidelines.
  • Perform regular maintenance on equipment including, but not limited to instruments, sterilizers, flush suction lines and change traps.
  • Maintain adequate supplies in operatory and lab areas. Ensure expiration dates are current.
  • Understand MSDS information relating to each chemical used in clinical areas, follow proper labeling procedure when moving chemical from one container to another (i.e. mixing Birex).
  • Follow appropriate sharps and medical waste management procedures, order or repair instruments and or equipment, etc.
  • Call in prescriptions per Doctor’s orders.
  • Obtain a solid understanding of computer system including, but not limited to, view schedule; post treatment; view patient account and history; and screens relating to patient balance.
  • Obtain general understanding of insurance including, but not limited to, account types; maximums; limitations; pre-authorizations; co-pays and lab fees due.
  • Attend and participate in office, departmental, and other staff meetings.
  • Follow policies in RDG’s Employee Handbook as well as operational/ safety policies and procedures.
  • Enhance own professional development.
  • Ensure internal and external communications by attending meetings, reading newsletter, etc.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements

  • OSHA Annual training provided by RDG
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation Current certification - Bi-annual recertification provided by RDG

Education and/or Experience

Requires education in a certified Dental Assistant program and two year’s related experience. Or, experience relative to a two degree.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, and procedure. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from doctors, managers, patients, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of dental medical instructions from any doctor.
