The School of Business and Management at Lees-McRae College invites applications for the position of dean at the faculty rank of assistant or associate professor, commensurate with experience. This is a 12-month position. The school houses programs including Business Administration, Outdoor Recreation Management, Wilderness Medicine and Rescue, and Sport Management with minors in Athletic Coaching, Cycling Studies, Marketing, and Ski Industry Business and Instruction. At the time of hire, the successful applicant must have completed a terminal degree in a school discipline. The school has a current need for teaching support in the area of Tourism and Resort Management and Leadership.

Dean: This position has a .5 FTE reassignment from teaching for administrative duties. The dean is responsible for the daily operation, organization, administration, general effectiveness, and supervision of faculty and programs within the school. In addition, the dean must demonstrate strong leadership skills and a commitment to developing quality academic programs. School-level strategic planning, development, and accreditation are expected as required.

Essential Functions
Teaching

  • The dean will be required to teach 6 credit hours per semester in their discipline as assigned by the program coordinator. The successful candidate will provide evidence of innovative teaching and curriculum development. Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to classroom management, student assessment, and assessment of student learning. Preferred experience in teaching courses in tourism and resort management.
  • Maintain professional standards of practice in teaching in the classroom.
  • Meet Lees-McRae standards for course syllabi creation and submission, classroom management, use of technology, grade submission, and records management.

Administrative Leadership

  • Operation of the Academic School: maintain efficient and effective academic operations; staffing; timely construction of course schedules; construction and oversight of school budget; oversight of physical facilities.
  • Faculty: Make recommendations regarding hiring of new personnel; evaluate faculty including annual reviews and promotion processes; encourage and assist with professional development of faculty.
  • Curriculum and assessment: Assure quality curriculum and facilitate changes through requisite committees; assure program assessment is conducted each semester and year.
  • Lead the School of Business and Management in program reviews in each area, making recommendations that are in alignment with Lees-McRae College strategic plan and initiatives.
  • Represent the school at Deans Council, administrative functions, and public forums.

Advising

  • Support student success through mentoring, tutoring, and advising.
  • Assign advising loads to school faculty.

Scholarship and Professional Development

  • Maintain currency in educational pedagogy and application through continuing education activities and professional development.
  • Promote and support undergraduate research opportunities.

Service

  • Serve on committees of the college, school, and Faculty Senate.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled faculty/administrative meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by the provost.

Supervisory Responsibility
The successful candidate will lead in attracting and developing faculty and staff members in cooperation with the program directors, coordinators and the provost. Plan, assign, and evaluate work performance and address faculty and staff issues when they arise, making the proper reports to academic leadership. They will assure careful oversight of physical and other resources in the school.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in a discipline represented by the School of Business and Management and earned at an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • At least 3 years of successful teaching in a university setting.
  • At least 3 years of successful, responsible administrative experience leading a department or school in visionary program review.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a discipline represented by the school and earned at an accredited institution recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • At least 5 years of successful teaching in a college or university setting.
  • At least 5 years of successful, responsible administrative experience leading a department or School of Business and Management.

Work Environment
Normal office environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, and the like.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to stand for periods of time.

The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
