What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Software Developer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

We are seeking a self-motivated database developer focused on procedures, data transformation and scripting to join our team in support of the Science Resource Office where you will focus on creative problem solving while creating mission-critical software. Our objective is to deliver reliable, secure, and cost-effective software and applications that meet business and operational needs in support of the LANL mission. Our team provides software engineering services, custom application development, and commercial off the shelf application implementations.

Software Developer 2 ($81,700 - $133,100)

We are evolving project management tools used across key functions at the lab in order to better respond to ever-changing demands. The selected candidate will lead the technical aspects of data migration and transformations, as well as provide hands-on operational support. As this service matures, the focus will shift to more of a technical product ownership role in support of further feature enhancements.

Software Developer 3 ($99,200 - $164,100)

In addition to what was outlines at the lower level, at this level you will:
  • Provide direction as technical lead
  • Self-initiate work with limited supervision, user independent judgement for determining the course of action to accomplish objectives, and use a broad range of advanced technical skills to solve complex technical issues
  • Provide support for production applications when issues arise.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience managing and operating relational database products such as SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL and can configure, design, troubleshoot, and optimize both installations and individual databases
  • Some experience with xml, and complex SQL queries will be needed to support data migration between different database technologies, as well as importing/exporting data
  • Can obtain a DOE Q clearance

Additional Job Requirements for Software Developer 3:
  • In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of secure coding practices
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and/or serve as a Technical Lead on projects and coordinate technical activities of project personnel
  • Analyze and define business requirements and preparing technical designs
  • Experience working on database migration from MS SQL server to other database technologies
  • Experience testing code, and dealing with production issues
  • Experience providing database designs for new features and bug fixes

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 4 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 8 years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience migrating data between MSS SQL and Oracle SQL
  • Experience with deploying, configuring, monitoring, and supporting Linux systems
  • Experience with any of the following: Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTPD, Symfony
  • Software Development experience a plus
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS, JSON, secure coding practices, and modern JavaScript libraries
  • Experience developing accurate time estimates for completing tasks and communicating any anticipated delays to stakeholders and affected team members as early as possible.
  • Experience with Cadre5 products, RESolution and/or PM2L

Location:

This position will be located in Los Alamos with the flexibility for the selected candidate to work from a location other than the primary location within a two-hour ground commute. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Remote is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment:

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
