Agency Information: Founded in 1866, Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. OSH serves individuals from 36 counties in Kansas in collaboration with 12 Community Mental Health Centers (CMHCs). The centers refer individuals for admission to the hospital through a collaborative screening process. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care.

Position Summary: Osawatomie State Hospital and Adair Acute Care at OSH are seeking Custodial/Laundry Specialists. This position cleans and sanitizes patient and non-patient areas in a manner which ensures patients receive treatment in a clean, safe environment. You will follow hospital policies/procedures related to infection control, proper cleaning techniques, disposal of common, medical and chemical waste products and any other housekeeping/laundry related policies.

This position has physical demands and you would need to have the ability to move about the campus, as there is substantial walking and standing on concrete floors (six to seven hours daily). There is considerable lifting, pushing, pulling, bending and stooping to care for laundry items weighing approximately 50 pounds. Work is primarily inside where area can be very hot, humid and noisy. Outside work is performed under all types of weather conditions. The ability to lift and carry items weighing at least 50 pounds for short distances is essential, as laundry must be delivered to wards by this means.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Cleans assigned areas; meeting rooms, nursing stations, day halls, hallways, and other areas as appropriate. Dust mops, mops, and vacuums floors. Polishes floors using buffer or burnisher and wax. Cleans assigned areas by washing furnishings, floors, and equipment with special cleaning solutions and disinfectants in warm water. Use dust cloths and vacuum cleaner to dust window sills, blinds, floors and furniture. Empties trash baskets and arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly manner. Cleans and polishes sinks, tubs, mirrors and similar equipment, replenishing supplies of soap, towels and other dispensable items.

Washes walls, ceilings and inside windows by using disinfectant in warm water, sponges and cloths. May be called upon to wash outside windows and screens. Gathers and disposes of trash, washes waste baskets and large refuse containers, and relines with paper or plastic bags. Hangs draperies, venetian blinds and shades. Completes requests for supplies needed to perform work. Checks for and reports light bulbs needing replaced. Reports any mechanical failures or negative conditions in assigned area for preparation of work order for maintenance.

Performs cleaning duties as outlined in departmental and hospital procedures to ensure a clean and safe environment. This includes cleaning equipment, floors, vehicles, multiple rooms and areas (e.g. sorting room, washer area, dryer area, folding areas, restrooms, break room, office) in order to reduce the risk of spread of infection.

Lifts and carries at least 50 pounds for short distances to pick-up linen and other laundry; sort soiled lines; load and unload linens into and from washers, dryers and extractors; as well as sort soiled linens; and deliver clean linens on a daily basis. Employee will sort soiled laundry using correct equipment and procedures.

Operates washers, dryers, extractors, presses and flat iron to process laundry. Employee must safely operate and maintain all equipment and notify facility services immediately of any repair issues.

Ensures soap, bleach, temperatures variations and acid reaction to certain textiles is monitored and addressed as needed. Follows written and oral instructions to maintain records of finished laundry items and supplies per day, week and month. Informs supervisor of needed supplies.

Perform other related work as required including providing coverage for other wards, collection of infections and hazardous waste for his/her unit, checks sharps containers daily and replace them when they are ¾ full. Inspect bio-hazard receptacles on a regular basis for needed repairs or painting and submit work orders. Personal protective equipment consisting of heavy-duty apron and gloves is to be worn at all times during collection and cleaning. Universal precautions are to be strictly followed. May serve as relief for bio-hazard waste collector. Participates as team member in special cleaning projects.
