The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources within Rutgers NJAES Cooperative Extension at Rutgers University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor). This position is located at the Morris County office of Rutgers Cooperative Extension, with a specific focus on commercial and consumer ornamental horticulture sectors with a strong emphasis on environmentally sustainable practices.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement
Under Policy 60.1.35, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility. Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine. Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
A Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in horticulture, plant science, or other closely related fields is required. In addition, applicants should have three years related experience after bachelor’s degree. Experience or course work in ornamental horticulture, integrated pest management, natural resource management, working with diverse audiences, and/or collaboration/coalition building are highly sought after. Bilingual fluency in Spanish is desirable.

Certifications/Licenses
Current licensure as a NJ Tree Expert, NJDEP Pesticide Applicator, and / or certifications from professional associations in the turf and ornamental sector are preferred but not required. A valid New Jersey driver’s license, ability to successfully complete Rutgers and / or Morris County Defensive Driving Course and other HR trainings as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
This position would be responsible for assisting clientele in implementing and sustaining proper horticultural management techniques in ornamental production and landscape settings. The successful candidate is also expected to work with agricultural producers and commercial landscapers with regards to regulatory programs such as NJ DEP pesticide control and water allocations. This position also assists in the supervision and delivery of ANR volunteer training programs within Morris County and in the region.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal communication skills (oral and written). Ability to address changing technology to serve clientele. Computer skills required. Evidence of recent educational materials and/or methods targeting diverse populations. Experience in working with people and evidence of effective human relations skills. Possess initiative, creativity, ability to take direction while also working independently to meet goals and deadlines, and a willingness to learn and improve proficiency in designated subject matter areas. Possess organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks within both office and field settings. Ability to plan, conduct, and evaluate programs for the commercial horticulture industry.

Equipment Utilized
Computer, printer, and related software including but not limited to Microsoft Office suite; Email for communications and research, locally and nationally; Equipment related to programming and teaching (laptop, LCD projector, etc.); digital cameras, etc. Working knowledge of current and changing electronic technology.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. Successfully and efficiently work in both office and research farm / landscape settings and field visits.

Overview
This ANR County Agent III in Morris County is expected to establish an outstanding program in commercial horticulture and landscape management, the merits of which will lead to regional and/or national recognition.
